Juan Fernando Quintero closing in on Arsenal transfer

Juan Fernando Quintero set for Arsenal switch .

Porto winger Juan Fernando Quintero will fly to London on Monday to complete a move to Arsenal, reports The Metro.

The report has suggested that the Colombian winger, who starred in this summer's World Cup, is set to join the north London outfit for £15.8million, with the deal seemingly close.

Interest

Quintero would certainly prove a major coup for the Emirates outfit, with a number of clubs having been credited with interest in his services in recent time. Arsenal's Premier League rivals Manchester United have previously been linked with the highly rated winger, with the report in the Metro suggesting that Spanish duo Barcelona and Real Madrid have shown interest.

It now seems likely, though, that the 21-year-old will join Wenger's side ahead of the new season. Gunners fans will certainly be excited by the possible signing after he impressed throughout the World Cup. Skilful, with an eye for goal, Quintero could offer the Gunners another option going forward next term.

Fifth signing?

Quintero, then, could become the Gunners' fifth major signing of the summer, with the club having already landed Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and David Ospina in this window.

The quartet already signed look set to play a key role in the first team next term, with Sanchez and Debuchy expected to be regulars in the side. Chambers and Ospina, meanwhile, will have to work hard in order to play week in week out in 2014/15.

Future

Gunners fans will certainly be excited heading into the new season, with the club looking to build upon their FA Cup success from 2013/14. Last season's fourth place finish helped them secure Champions League football for the up coming campaign, but they will be desperate to land the Premier League title next term.

Arsenal certainly appear to be in better shape heading into the new season, and will be hoping to make early statement in the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 10. Wenger's side, meanwhile, kick off their Premier League venture against Crystal Palace at the Emirates on August 16.

Arsenal fans: Do you think Juan Fernando Quintero will prove a good signing for your club? Have your say below!

England hammer India to level series

Moeen Ali celebrates his five-wicket haul..

Moeen Ali spun England to their first Test Match victory since last August as the all-rounder snared a six wicket haul to help the hosts beat India by 266 runs at the Ageas Bowl.

After taking two wickets on the fourth evening, Alastair Cook’s faith in Ali was there for all to see after the Worcestershire man ripped through India’s lower order to back up James Anderson’s fine form with the swinging ball.

The result means the five-match Investec Test series is tied at 1-1 with two games to play so the contest is set-up beautifully ahead of the fourth match at Old Trafford which gets under way next Thursday.

After a dismal winter where they were whitewashed by Australia England followed that up with a 1-0 loss to Sri Lanka before failing to win either of the opening two Tests in the current series but a return to form for their senior players has resulted in a resounding victory.

Cook hit 95 to complement Ian Bell’s first century in almost 12 months while Gary Ballance impressed once again with a fluid century before debutant Jos Buttler plundered 85 to exert England’s dominance.

Anderson then produced his 16th five-wicket haul in the Test arena to help bowl India out whilst trailing England’s mammoth 569-7 declared by 239 runs.

After quick runs by Bell, Ballance and especially Joe Root which was held together by Cook the hosts declared on the cusp of tea to give themselves four sessions to bowl India out but in the end two sessions was more than enough.

In the post-match presentation live on Sky Sports, the England captain gave his reaction to a dominant victory:

“I don’t think it’s ‘relieved’, ‘happy’ is a better word!

“It was a great performance from day one. We pretty much won every session, well we didn’t lose a session, and that’s credit to the guys,” said Cook.

“People stood up. Every single one of the XI who played has contributed to a great win. We wanted to get on the wicket first and bat well, getting 570 was a great start, then we bowled them out, put pressure on them, batted quickly then bowled them out cheaply so yes, it was the perfect game!”

Cook was quick to praise the efforts of his bowlers in particular and especially Ali who ended the game with eight wickets. The all-rounder was brought into the team as a ‘part-time’ off-spinner with his main role to score runs batting at number six but his captain is over the moon with how he is developing.

“His bowling has come on leaps and bounds from the beginning of the summer. He’s worked really hard on it with the guys in the nets, telling him about the lines to bowl, which are a bit different in international cricket.

“He’s responded incredibly well and on a spinning wicket to get six-for to win the game you couldn’t ask for any more.”

The public couldn’t ask any more from their captain either after a superb 95 in the first innings which was backed up by 70 not out to help set-up the declaration. However, his captaincy on the field was arguably even more pleasing with the rotation of his bowlers key in picking up wickets at regular intervals and he admits he feels in a good place.

“I said at Lord’s that I thought my game was heading back in the right direction and with a 10 and a 20 it’s probably a strange thing to say but to back it up I was incredibly pleased,” he said.

“I was frustrated not to get a hundred in the first-innings but I’ll take 160 runs in a game.”

The support at Hampshire was also highlighted by the 29-year-old who paid tribute to the fans on the south coast .

“It was obviously a tough Test match with it being on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays when we don’t usually play but the support, especially walking out on Sunday, I’ll never forget the reception I got walking off at lunch.

“I want to thank Southampton. It’s been a fantastic week.”

Andy Murray: Reasons why he will win the US Open

Murray won the US Open in 2012 (©GettyImages).

Britain’s Andy Murray may not have had the most successful of years by his standards, but all is not lost as he prepares for the final Grand Slam of the year.

While the 27-year-old has continued to struggle to recover from the back surgery that forced him to miss the end of the 2013 season, with his world ranking dropping from fourth to 10th this year, he is now at optimum fitness going into the second hard court season of the year.

The Dunblane-born player has not played since losing to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, and he is yet to win a singles title since winning the tournament at SW19 in 2013.

But here are five reasons why he can turn his year on its’ head in New York, and replicate the scenes of 2012, where he won his first Grand Slam title, making him the first British man to win a Grand Slam since Fred Perry in 1936.

New Zealand players looking to switch nations

All Blacks' players have been linked with Tonga (©GettyImages).

In many sports the idea an athlete can change the country he plays for has become a common outcome, as seen in the 2014 World Cup, but in rugby is the concept of a player choosing a rival nation justified?

According to OneNews, a numnber of players from New Zealand are looking to play for a fellow rival country due to not being picked by the All Blacks.

But there is nothing stopping them as they can represent a fellow nation if they haven't played international rugby for 18 months, as they can go on and become eligible to play all forms of rugby for that chosen country as long as they hold their passport.

Loyalty

But when does loyalty to your own country come into perspective? There is the understanding athletes want to play on the highest stage and achieve all the great treasures in their short time at the top of their game, but is this a reason to turn your back on your home nation?

It's not like they have been abandoned from playing for New Zealand or any other country, they had their time and as they were reaching the advanced years of their career the younger, more energised players started coming through the ranks.

Some of the players looking to play for another country are the likes of Roy Kinikinilau, Lifeimi Mafi and Alando Soakai who have commented on their goals to play for Tonga, while All Blacks' legend Joe Rokocko and Sitiveni Sivivatu have announced ambitions to play for Fiji.

A Career Move

However, these decisions have to be looked at through the eyes of a professional, if a player has decided to change country he is only doing it for his own career.

There are many players based around the world who have been shut out of international duty and have look back through their ancestral background to find another nation.

In a way, it may be easier to push through a smaller nation who rely on players based in their own country, instead of choosing a nation who have a large choice of players based in the top rugby leagues.

World Cup

Also with the World Cup next year, players like Rokocoko and Soakai could end their international careers in the way they want to; playing on the biggest stage in possibly their last international tournament.

The only problem with this is that these players, who have represented the All Blacks for nearly their entire careers, are switching allegiance and are choosing a fierce rival to which many fans may see as an unforgiveable option.

But what needs to be understood is if a player can play for another country they should be allowed, it is their decision and every players want the best for themselves.

We see it happen all the time in other sports and it is something that needs to be recognised as conventional.

Tiger Woods admits it's a "No-win fight' in his battle with baldness

Tiger Woods is thinning out on the top .

The extremely competitive nature of Tiger Woods does not often let him admit to facing a losing battle but there is one contest that even the superstar golfer has had to concede too.

Tiger has accepted that he is losing the battle with his hairline, years of thinning out on the top with unhelpful additions of baseball caps has left Woods admitting that he is facing a 'no-win fight'

The 38-year old recently met with Fox Sports' Colleen Dominguez in which he was interviewed about the process the golfer currently faces with his ageing body and his comfort level with it.

Tiger went on to say: "I'm comfortable with it; my hairline's not. I have a nice skylight [at home], and if I don't wear a hat, I can feel the heat."

The question was posed to Woods on whether he would consider shaving all his hair off, Tiger responded: ""I think I will, but I'm fighting the cause. I'm fighting it hard. It's a no-win fight, but I'm hanging in there."

There is no doubt that when you are talking about the hair loss of a superstar athlete there is only one name that really comes to mind, LeBron James.

James has been battling his hairline for years much like Woods and both global stars have their own way of combatting the problem, James has been able to hide his hairline with a headband however rather unsuccessfully, whilst Woods can always hide his hair with a cap.

Charles Barkley has mentioned to many occasions to LeBron James that he should 'Come on home' and join fellow NBA analysts and bald men himself, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal by completely shaving their head.

James has vowed to continue to fight the battle to keep what hair he has left and seems Woods will continue in the same vain as he admitted he will continue to battle in what he calls a no-win fight.

Scotland fail in Commonwealth Games

Is it a time for a head in hands moment for scottish fans? (©GettyImages).

Scotland have done a fantastic job in hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games and in return have a vast amount of medals to show for their hard work, but this year their chances of winning a medal in the Rugby Sevens disappeared abruptly.

Having escaped the group - only losing won game to one of the favourites New Zealand - the hosts looked comfortable in their other two games against Canada and underdogs Barbados.

But in the knockout stages the class shone through and Scotland were left licking their wounds when South Africa ran riot, beating the home nation 35-10 in the Ibrox Stadium, before going on to win gold in this years' tournament beating New Zealand in the final 17-12.

Scotland

However, was this a positive step forward for the hosts? Scotland have been deemed as the pushover nation in Rugby Union, mainly in the Six Nations as Scotland battle it out with Italy to see who will end up with the wooden spoon, as the prize is a tongue-in-cheek method of congratulating the worst team after five games.

Even in the coveted Calcutta Cup when England take on Scotland, England have won the competition 72 of the 142 match ups, and yet England remained unbeaten in this cup for the last five years.

In fact, the last time Scotland won the cup was in 2008 as the Scottish have only won the Calcutta cup three times in 14 years. But there are positives to look at, especially in the growth of the sport.

In the current Scotland team managed by Vern Cotter, Cotter has gone for a mix of experience and youth, while Rugby Sevens coach Stevie Gemmel placed Stuart Hogg in the team, hoping to give experience and leadership in a young exuberant team.

Scotland's tour

Scotland recently had a rugby union tests tour against the likes of Canada, USA and Argentina, where Cotter chose 47 players for the tour with 21 of players aged 25 or below, and only one of these under 25s hadn't made a senior cap.

In the tour Scotland went on to beat Canada, USA and Argentina before losing to fierce rival South Africa on the final day of their tour 55-6.

But on a positive note collecting three wins out of four is a great achievement and an incentive for the future Six Nations and the World Cup.

World Cup

The Scots have been draw in Pool B of the 2015 tournament alongside the likes of Samoa and South Africa, as the team ranked eighth in the World could surely finish second in this challenging group.

All that needs to be considered by Cotter is what type of squad does his bring to next years' two prestigious tournaments.

Does he go for a young skilful and fearless team, or an experienced team who can claw results? Because this is a time for putting the final touches to the national team and going on to build from there as the next year will answer a lot of questions.

England edging towards victory over India

Moeen Ali claimed two wickets. (©GettyImages).

England continued to pile the pressure on India on day four of the third Test at the Ageas Bowl. The visitors will now have to break the world record Test run chase to snatch victory from Peter Moores’ side.

With just the Indian tail left to face the morning session, Stuart Broad and James Anderson took the wickets of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shami Ahmed respectively.

The Three Lions opted not to enforce the follow-on, with India still trailing by 239. A tired-looking Broad and Anderson were thought to have played a major part in that decision, having gone to such lengths to reduce India to 330 all out.

Openers Alastair Cook and Sam Robson started off fairly slowly considering the time pressure on England, and the latter made just 13, as India looked to stay in the game. The Middlesex man will be disappointed with yet another short spell at the crease, amid calls from some quarters for him to be dropped.

Cook leads again

However, captain Cook proved that his 95 in the first innings was not an aberration, with another impressive knock of 70 not out.

Having both hit centuries on day two, Gary Ballance and Ian Bell failed to replicate those performances again, perhaps feeling the imperative to put runs on the board quickly.
Joe Root, on the other hand, weighed in with a half century.

Root reached 56 off just 41 balls, but lost his wicket, clean bowled by Ravindra Jadeja, shortly before tea. That, together with what should be an unassailable target of 444, prompted Cook to declare on 205-4.

India slip up again

India cracked on their return to the crease, and it was not immediately clear whether they were attempting to chase down the runs or hold out for a draw.

Murali Vijay was first to fall, run out by Stuart Broad. Coach Duncan Fletcher will no doubt be disappointed with the cheapness of his dismissal, particularly as India already had their backs to the wall.

Chris Jordan then took two catches in quick succession, first seeing off Shikhar Dhwan off the bowling of Root. Cheteshwar Pujara then hit a Moeen Ali ball straight to the Sussex all-rounder to hand England further control in the last session of the day.

Ali then got the better of Virat Kohli, who was caught behind by Jos Buttler. After three early wickets, Kohli made some attempt to steady the ship with 28, but there was little he could do to prevent the inevitable.

India will have to perform nothing short of a miracle if they are to avoid defeat on the final day, still trailing by 335.

Rory McIlroy targets more Major success at US Open

McIlroy was in understandably high spirits as he spoke to press at Firestone on Tuesday (©GettyImages).

Rory McIlroy's name has been engraved on the Claret Jug for little over a week now, but the three-time Major winner is already dreaming of holding aloft the Wanamaker trophy at next week's US PGA in Kentucky.

Before that, though, comes the final World Golf Championship event of the 2014 PGA Tour season - the Bridgestone Invitational - at Firestone Country Club in Akron.

And if the Northern Irishman were to secure his maiden WGC title this coming week in Ohio, he would topple Australia's Adam Scott at the top of the Official World Golf rankings just in time for the season's final Major at Valhalla; making him officially the world's best golfer for the first time since March last year.

Four

The 25-year-old, however, is only thinking of one number right now following his exceptional wire-to-wire victory at the Open: four.

"The next number in my head is four," he told reporters in the build-up to Firestone. "I've won three of them [Majors]. I'd like to win my fourth, and that's it, and just keep going like that, just one after the other."

Related Articles

That way of thinking has worked well for the current-world number three in the past; he opened up his Major account at the 2011 US Open which immediately followed his final-day collapse at Augusta, three years ago now, before going on to win his second just over a year later at the 2012 US PGA at Kiawah Island.

2012 brilliance

The run of form that followed is one of the most emphatic of recent times; he collected two wins during the FedEx Cup playoffs, and went on to emulate Englishman Luke Donald's achievement of finishing top of both money lists on the European and PGA Tour when he added another title to his CV; the DP World Tour Championship, or Race to Dubai as it is more widely recognised.

With another Major added to his credentials - perhaps his most important one of all following his torrid time on and off the course throughout 2013 - McIlroy is eager to embark on a similar run to the one that saw him rise to the top of the game early on his career.

With three legs of the career Grand Slam complete, all of the talk post-Hoylake was of next year's Masters, where the mild-mannered McIlroy will attempt to become just the sixth player in the sport's history to win all four Majors at some point in their career.

Career Grand Slam

That opportunity is one he will have for the rest of his career whenever he enters Magnolia Lane in Georgia at the start of Masters week. So for now, his plan is simple: keep on winning.

"As I said, you need goals, but that's obviously too much of a long-term goal [setting a Major record]. I'd like to set shorter-term goals, even if it's trying to improve something in my game because then all those short-term goals will help you achieve the long-term goal in the end," he continued.

"So, the only number I'm worried about at the minute is four," he added. "I've always thought that way, and never put a number on it."

Woods scrutiny

Since McIlroy's emergence as the sport's leading star, Tiger Woods aside, comparisons have been drawn with the man has 14 Major titles himself, but is facing the longest drought of his career in that department having failed to add to his haul since the 2008 US Open.

But he has also experienced first hand the amount of pressure Woods is under whenever he appears at an event - particularly the Majors of recent years. Questions about his future are asked time and time again, although that is partly down to the standards the record-breaking Man in Red set of himself early on his career.

McIlroy's latest comments suggest he is going to adopt a different approach.

19?

"I know how many Majors the greats of the game have won. But I never wanted to compare myself. At least at the end of my career, there's not going to be disappointment. Oh, I wanted to get to 15, but I only got 12, bummer," he joked.

"You still got 12 Majors, you know what I mean? I just don't want to end my career like that. I'd love to end my career with 12 Majors, but I don't want it to be a disappointment."

Right now, the magic number is four. Soon, it will more than likely be five. Then six; seven - who really knows how many, or can even hazard a reasonable guess.

One thing is for sure; he's here for the long haul… 19, anyone?

Manchester United direct preliminary medical checks on Arturo Vidal

Vidal is close to Man Utd move. (©GettyImages).

Manchester United may have already completed preliminary medical checks on Arturo Vidal and that details over a deal to sign him from Juventus are close to being finalised.

According to Chilean outlet El Mercurial, Vidal is very close to agreeing a deal with the Old Trafford club and that a transfer, reported in some corners to be worth as much as £40million, should not take long to complete.

Advanced negotiations

El Mercurial also runs with reports from Italy that suggest the deal is so advanced that preliminary medical tests have been made on behalf of Manchester United in Italy. The report also claims that talks between the representatives of Vidal and the Premier League club were concluded quickly.

However, this report goes against what Juventus have been saying publicly about the prospect of Vidal leaving this summer. The club’s new manager, Massimiliano Allegri, this week insisted the Bianconeri had no desire to sell one of their prized assets this summer.

Allegri replaced Antonio Conte in the managerial hotseat midway through July after the three-time Serie A winning manager made a shock resignation and inherited one of the longest drawn out transfer sagas this summer.

While the Italian insisted Juventus were keen to hang on to the Chile international, he did not completely rule out a sale. Manchester United will have been encouraged by comments that hinted the 27-year-old could be granted a move if he asked for one.

Still hope

"The ideal thing would be not only to keep hold of Vidal but to bring others in," Allegri told reporters on Tuesday.

"We have never activated a clause to try to sell him and if he doesn't show an intention to leave, our position won't change. He is a player that I consider fundamental and he wants to stay here.”

United need more steel

Manchester United are in need of some experience and quality in their central midfield in front of the defence, as they have lost Michael Carrick to long-term injury and the other options in the middle have failed to fulfil the role of midfield destroyer effectively.

Darren Fletcher has played that position effectively in the past, but long-standing health issues mean new Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal is probably unable, not to mention unwilling, to rely on him being fit to play regularly for long periods.

Vidal would be perfect for Van Gaal as he would bring with him the combative skills and tactical intelligence of one of the world’s most effective box-to-box midfielders. The former Bayer Leverkusen star has good quality as well and would be able to dovetail effectively with new boy Ander Herrera in the middle, not to mention popping up with the odd goal.

Manchester United players are busy preparing for the Premier League season in North America, and they bumped into some tennis stars who are also readying themselves for a big event - the US Open.

New big-money signing Ander Herrera joined existing first team stars Juan Mata and Antonio Valencia on the eve of their pre-season clash with Inter Milan in Washington.

Meeting

Greeting the members of new manager Louis van Gaal's side were Madrid Open finalist Kei Nishikori, former Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych and Andy Murray's brother Jamie.

The group are all aware of the demands and pressures of top end sport, and they took a rare opportunity to showcase the fun side of their respective sports and indulge in some keepy-uppys in front of photographers. Berdych then presented the footballers with one of his racquets and received a shirt in return.

The world no.5 revealed afterwards that he enjoyed the chance to mix with some fellow pros: "For us the only time we can see them is on the TV; there's really not much time to go and see some matches live," said the Czech Republican. "This is even better, just to meet with them, talk, chat, exchange some gifts. It's really cool."

Preparations

The Red Devils will kick-off their season in August, and it wont be long after that the action begins at Flushing Meadows.

Jamie Murray, the elder brother of Andy at 29-years-old, has experienced some triumph in New York - not quite as much as his sibling who who won his first Grand Slam in 2012 on the hard surface, however.

The predominantly doubles player reached the gentleman's quarter-finals last year with John Peers, and that followed a runners-up medals in the mixed doubles with Liezel Huber in 2008.

He too lauded the visit, especially considering he is a fan of the Old Trafford outfit: "It was awesome, they were all really cool guys," said Murray. "They were good fun to speak to. Definitely not your average doe for us."

Footballers and tennis

United stars past and present - and indeed the footballing world - are no strangers to being seen in the crowd of big tennis matches.

Former players David Beckham and Sir Bobby Charlton were spotted on Centre Court during Wimbledon. The likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Nemanja Vidic and Ryan Giggs are also partial to a spot of SW19 action.

Juan Mata in particular would have enjoyed meeting Berdych and co, he was once invited by Rafael Nadal to watch one of his matches. Cristiano Ronaldo has also supported the defending US Open champion in the past.

US Open

Nadal could've used their support a Wimbledon this year, as the Spaniard lost his world no.1 ranking to Novak Djokovic following a third successive failure in London - Australian teenage sensation Nick Kyrgios shocked him in round four earlier this month.

He'll be hoping the stars return for his US Open defence. Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray, however, are all former champions who will be looking to return to glory when the event starts on August 25th.

Golfing World News - July 29

Tiger’s FedEx Doubt, DJ’s withdrawal and Furyk’s Ryder Cup place.

Tiger Woods has confirmed his involvement at Notah Begay’s charity event casting further doubt on his involvement in the FedExCup playoffs.

Begay’s invitational takes place the Wednesday after The Barclays – the PGA Tour's first event in the season-ending series – and two days before the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Woods is currently 215th in the standings with only the top 125 players teeing off for The Barclays on August 21st.

Tiger will have to impress this week as he looks to defend his WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club but one person who won’t be challenging the eight-time winner is Dustin Johnson.

Johnson, who impressed at The Open but missed the cut at the RBC Canadian Open pulled out citing personal reasons.

Jim Furyk’s second place finish at the Canadian may have seen him extend his winless streak but the 44-year-old did have reason to cheer as he confirmed his place in the Ryder Cup team.

With the top nine players automatically qualifying for a place at Gleneagles it’s Patrick Reed who is currently just outside the points list.

In addition to the nine which make it via the standings, captain Tom Watson will also have three wildcard picks.

Novak Djokovic picks mystery child as future successor

Could Novak's young friend follow in his footsteps (©GettyImages).

Novak Djokovic has got tennis scouts' eyes wagging after announcing that he has found a future champion of the sport. If his prediction is a good as his tennis, well then we may just have a potential legend on our hands.

The Wimbledon champion has taken to Twitter to inform his followers - more than three million of them - about the talented youngster.

Mystery new star?

Details are a little sketchy on who the child is, all that Djokovic reveals is his name, Clement, as he said: "My little friend Clement is growing into a champion. I've been following his career for couple of years now and he is improving all the time and doing all the right things for his body & mind. He keeps adding new trophies to his collection, i'm so proud of him! Well done buddy!"

Don't expect Clement to be on the road to Grand Slam honours anytime soon though. A picture of the pair, which is attached with the message, shows that the child barely reaches the height of the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

Internet searches on the youngster don't throw up any answers, it seems Djokovic really has found a hidden gem.

Perhaps the Serbian star will coach his little buddy, not many people would want to turn that sort of help down. What better preparation could you have for a career on top of tennis' tree, where Djokovic has spent much of his?

Champions' stronghold

Luckily the hyped-youngster isn't ready to challenge the world no.1 yet. Tennis is still firmly entrenched in its golden era with the traditional big four of Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray - players have thus far managed to break through the illustrious quartet.

Many talented stars have threatened to dominate, but have fallen away with a lack of consistency.

Stanislas Wawrinka finally won his first Grand Slam in Australia this year but was disappointing at the French Open and couldn't comeback to win Wimbledon. Juan Martin del Potro won the US Open in 2009, he too failed to build upon it - though his return from injury could act as a positive.

Breakthrough acts

Former champion John McEnroe revealed he was worried about the future of tennis with no stand-out performers coming through, but this year's Wimbledon has seen a new wave of hopefuls.

Grigor Dimitrov and Milos Raonic - recent entrants into the rankings' top 10 - broke new ground at SW19 as they reached their maiden Grand Slam semi-finals. They will be hoping to continue their ascent at Flushing Meadows next month.

Perhaps the most shocking breakthrough act was Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios. The 19-year-old, a wildcard pick at London, defied his world ranking out of the top 100 to defeat 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal in round four.

Maybe McEnroe needn't fear the future after all.

South Africa win rugby sevens gold at the Commonwealth Games

South Africa win 7s Gold in Glasgow (©GettyImages).

South Africa won rugby sevens Commonwealth gold in front of a record crowd in Glasgow on Sunday evening.

A closely-fought final saw South Africa edge to a 17-12 win over New Zealand. The result ends the All Blacks' 30 match-unbeaten run in the format.

New Zealand dominance over

Previously, New Zealand had won the gold medal at every other Commonwealth games since rugby sevens was introduced to proceedings in 1998.

The weekend-long competition saw domination by the Southern Hemisphere as all four participants from that region – South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Samoa - reached the medal semi-finals.

It was a disappointing showing from the Home Nations, however, with Scotland, England and Wales reaching the quarter-finals of the medal tournament but missing out on the chance to compete in the semi-finals.

England and Wales went on to compete for the Plate, which England won 17-15. However,  hosts Scotland went no further than the Plate semi-final, losing to eventual winners England 15-12.

The fast and furious variation of the 15 a-side format that many people are used to seeing drew in a record crowd for a rugby sevens tournament.

Growing popularity

The format’s growing popularity has peaked with it having been made an Olympic event.

It was voted in 2009 by the International Olympic Committee to be added to the list of events for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The format currently has regular tournaments at club and International level, with New Zealand being the most successful at international level with 11 titles.

Fellow southern hemisphere sides Fiji, Samoa and South Africa all have one title a piece. However, no Northern Hemisphere side has won the tournament yet.

England still hold the edge over India

Broad celebrates after taking one of his three wickets..

England remained in control of the third Investec Test Match against India after an intriguing day at the Ageas Bowl ended with the tourists trailing Alastair Cook’s men by 246 runs with 2 first innings wickets remaining.

That meant India need 47 more runs on Wednesday morning if they are to avoid the follow-on, that is if Alastair Cook would want to insert the opposition again with Stuart Broad hinting that would be unlikely after a hard day in the field.

MS Dhoni is the man they will need to remove quickly on the fourth morning as he currently stands on 50 not out along with Mohammed Shami on four with Broad and James Anderson gunning for a five-wicket haul.

Play started in sunshine on the south coast and Chris Woakes joined Anderson in opening the bowling in Southampton and despite bowling with good control the breakthrough didn’t happen until Broad replaced Woakes who quickly removed Cheteshwar Pujara for 24. The batsman couldn’t handle a bouncer by the Nottinghamshire man with debutant Jos Buttler taking the catch behind the stumps.

Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli then made it through until the drinks break as India stood on 75-2. Opener Vijay was soon dismissed though as he dragged the ball onto his own stumps to hand Broad his second wicket of the morning with Ajinkya Rahane joining Kohli at the wicket.

Unfortunately for the hosts and particularly Moeen Ali, Rahane survived until the lunch break, even though replays proved he gloved the ball through to Buttler, Rod Tucker gave him not out to once again reiterate the importance of DRS in test cricket.

India are currently the only nation not to use the Decision Review System which would have upturned Gary Ballance’s wicket yesterday after he was incorrectly given out after reaching 150.

Kohli had a life after lunch after Cook dropped a difficult catch off the bowling of Chris Jordan but five minutes later his luck ran out on 39 after the captain this time clung on to a much easier chance off Anderson at first slip.

Rahane brought up his half-century off 92 balls and India’s 200 in the process with the loss of four wickets but with the clock ticking down to tea Rohit Sharma skied a Moeen Ali ball to Broad who made no mistake to leave the score at tea 214-5.

England’s spinner made it a double strike after removing Rahane shortly after the 20 minute break ahead of the evening session. The in-form batsman was licking his lips when Ali bowled a half-tracker but Rahane could only hit the ball straight up into the hands on sub fielder Sean Parry.

The Hampshire youngster was on the field in place of Ian Bell who had hurt his finger going for a catch earlier in the day. The latest news at the close of play in regards to England’s first innings top scorer had suffered no fracture but had acute bruising.

After finding no further breakthrough Cook decided to take the new ball with Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease on 238-6 and the pair briefly went on the attack against Anderson and Broad.

However, Anderson soon had his third wicket of the innings after his ‘rival’ Jadeja was caught out and was given lbw for31 which brought in-form Bhuvneshwar Kumar to join his captain.

Kumar went before the close of play after Gary Ballance leapt forward from third slip to catch the Indian as play ended on 323-8, trailing by 246 runs.

Manchester United reach agreement with Arturo Vidal ahead of $80m transfer

Vidal's future could be decided soon.

Arturo Vidal has been linked with a move to Manchester United for some time now but it seems as though the transfer is gathering pace, with Chilean newspaper El Mecurcio reporting today in a huge double page spread that the Juventus ace has a "verbal agreement" with the Red Devils and will complete an $80 million (£47m) move soon.

The paper adds that Manchester United have offered the 27-year-old an eye-watering $18 million-per-year, which works out at roughly £10m or just under £200,000-per-week.

Huge deal

Vidal is said to be one of new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal's main transfer priorities this summer as he looks to solve a problem that has dogged the club for some time now. Ander Herrera has signed on the dotted line at Old Trafford but the Dutchman still wants another body in the middle of the park, one the can add an element of physicality and dynamism that is currently missing from his squad.

However there have been more than a few conflicting reports about the Chilean and his potential move to Manchester United in recent weeks. The player himself has admitted that he is unsure of where he will be next season although he insists he is happy at Juventus.

Denial

The Italian club's Director General Beppe Marotta also claimed today that they had no intention of selling their star midfielder - although the Daily Mail reported yesterday that their financial troubles may well force the Turin club to sell up.

Now El Mercurio are carrying the news that all Manchester United fans want to hear; that Vidal is on his way to Old Trafford. Under the headline "Vidal prepares to jump from Turin to Old Trafford", the Chilean source say that a deal worth around £47 million is close - and that figure tallies with the bid that Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport say Manchester United had lodged yesterday.

Manchester United boost

El Mercurio also add that he will receive a salary of $18 million, which would put him right amongst the Red Devils' highest earners.

Were the dynamic midfielder to complete his move to Old Trafford, he would be Louis van Gaal's third major signing of the summer following the arrivals of Ander Hererra and Luke Shaw. Along with a midfielder, the Dutch boss is believed to be in the market for a new defender - that man could be Thomas Vermaelen - and potentially a new full-back.

Carlin Isles to feature for New York City in World Cup 7s

Isles has been captioned the world's fastest rugby player (©GettyImages).

New York City have been known for their franchises in baseball, basketball and soccer, but now they are planning to crash the World Club 7s tournament with the included surprise package of Carlin Isles.

Isles is said to be the world's fastest rugby player, as the former American sprinter was once the 36th fastest man in America but now the 24-year-old has joined New York's rugby sevens team for the World Club 7s at Twickenham Stadium in August.

Historic Moment

In a recent interview with Premiership Rugby, director of rugby at New York City 7s Steve Lewis commented that this will be a historic moment for the team, and the young stars taking part.

"This will be a terrific opportunity for some of our younger local players to represent New York and USA Rugby, showcase their talents, and experience top-level competition," Lewis commented.

"As we approach the Olympic qualification year, we are hopeful this can be a springboard for these players to excel and challenge for national squad places in the near future."

Isles

The American has recently signed for Glasgow Warriors from his Colorado club Gentlemen of Aspen and is looking to make a lasting impression on the Scottish fans, and once Isles starts moving though the gears there is no catching this winger.

The 24-year-old can weave in and out of defences and can cause so many problems for the players he will be coming up against, and the former American footballer is a growing talent.

He is a joy to watch, but not for the opposition, and once he receives the ball he delivers a constant threat as YouTube is filled with videos of the American taking great teams to pieces and leaving them in his dust as he scores.

This unstoppable talent can change a game in an instant, and he carries experience as well having already represented USA 14 times.

NYC 7s

New York City's rugby team is a mixture between players who have represented their country and fellow countrymen who play their rugby in the heart of America, as Isles, Will Holder and Garrett Bender all have featured for USA's sevens team.

While the likes of Nate Brackeley and Chris Mattina are both part of the New York Athletics Club, and Seamus Kelly plays for the University of California.

USA's first game will be against RC Enisei, a Russian club, before they take on South African side DHL Western Province and a team which is still yet to be confirmed.

New York City will be going into this tournament as the underdogs, along with fellow America side Seattle and will be seen as an easy win, but the match-up will be in anyones favour.

If NYC remain solid in their defensive tactics and utilise the full pace and power of Isles over the three days, they could cause any team problems and possibly go further in this competition that first predicted.

Maria Sharapova and Grigor Dimitrov add spice to the sport

Tennis' most high-profile relationship (©GettyImages).

'Sharatrov' or 'Dimipova'; I'm still scratching my head as to which nickname works best for the Maria Sharapova/Grigor Dimitrov relationship. Whatever the case, the pair's partnership can only be good for tennis.

There's a danger with modern sports nowadays that personalities and off-field talking points are being ground away in order to save pubic image.

Press conferences of football manager and top end footballers, for example, in the most part, are just repetitive bile churned-out on the advice of over-protective PR and in-house media representatives.

Big personalities

The exuberant, yet exciting days of Ian Botham, John McEnroe and Paul Gascoigne are being ruthlessly discouraged. Just look at the modern-day mavericks, Kevin Pietersen and Mario Balotelli, they lose their places for the perceived unhelpful fanfare that follows their actions, but they are entertainers.

Andy Murray is a big example of how a top-range British sportsman was forced to curl completely into his shell.

The Scottish-born star has an underrated personality, if there was ever such thing. You get the impression from fellow pros that the 27-year-old is a popular man in private, but his dry sense of humour never transferred well in the media.

Questions over his: "Britishness," was always a major talking point, from that point onward the the two-time major champion was sure to avoid controversy, perhaps leading to perceptions of dullness.

Perfect partnership

An easy balance, therefore, cannot be easy to strike up. However, Sharapova and Dimitrov certainly look to be on the right path.

Their relationship is a bright spark, regardless of whether the purists may claim it to be nothing more than a Daily Mail's dream-type distraction from the clean hitting and on-court heritage that those purists want tennis to be known as.

They both provide a talking point, and show the lighter, more breezier side to the ultra competitive sport. Whilst keeping themselves to themselves, the duo promote intrigue and interest, rather than getting involved in trashy headlines.

Growth

It cannot be easy to sustain relationships between two top-end sportspeople; Rory McIllroy and Caroline Wozniacki's recent plight lends evidence to that, but to see Sharapova and Dimitrov working is great.

Their respective images have clearly improved through it.

Dimitrov, the next big thing in the men's game

To be fair Sharapova has always excelled off-court, her endorsements, businesses and other ventures see her take a place in the top five highest earning tennis players - but her relationship reveals another more personal side. Dimitrov, meanwhile, despite having never won a Grand Slam, has seen his marketability shoot up.

So we have two stars increasing the profile of the sport to a wider audience without any of the negativity; maybe we need a few more 'Sharatrovs' (I've decided that's my pick.)

Pietersen joins Melbourne Stars

This is what KP will look like! ©Melbourne Stars.

Former England star Kevin Pietersen will be returning to Australia this winter after signing a deal to play for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

The 34-year-old has been rumoured with the club who play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for some time after it was clear he wouldn’t be playing for England again.

When he lines up in the green of the Stars it will be the fourth club side he will have represented in 2014. After leading the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League he joined Surrey where he has helped them reach the quarter finals of the NatWest T20 Blast.

He is soon to jet off to the Caribbean where he will have a short stint with St Lucia Zouks before returning to England for a potential finals day with his main county.

After a few months away from the on field limelight then the destructive top order batsman will meet up with the Melbourne Stars at the beginning of December for the eight game season which runs until January 21st.

Pietersen is still England’s leading run scorer for England after playing 104 Tests, 136 ODIs and 37 T20 internationals and is set to join his former England team mate Luke Wright who was nominated for the player of the tournament in the third edition of the annual event.

KP has spoken to melbournestars.com.au after it was announced he would be calling the MCG 'home'.

“I’m very excited about joining the Melbourne Stars and look forward to playing with some of Australia’s best T20 cricketers,” Pietersen said.

“Joining the Melbourne Stars was an easy choice for me when you look at the players we have and the amazing off-field support staff, and don’t forget our home ground, the MCG.

“I’m told the Melbourne Stars Members are the best in the country and I can’t wait to become a part of the Stars family.”

The right-handed batsman has already been up to some mischief on his instagram account @KP24 after signing for Melbourne which shows a picture of Pietersen blowing a kiss at the Gabba crowd with the Brisbane public gesturing their displeasure to the man who called their city boring.

Cameron White will once again captain the Stars in BBL|04 and he is delighted to have one of the most recognisable faces in world cricket on his side.

“We’re really looking forward to Kevin being part of our Club. He’s a tremendous addition to the squad and will fit in really well, and he’ll hopefully provide us the edge to go deeper into the tournament this year,” said White.

The Stars will have a difficult decision to make with White and Wright opening the batting in last season’s competition, Pietersen may have to bat at number three, a position he currently holds in the Surrey line-up. That will be a decision to be made by head coach Greg Shipperd who has commented: “We are delighted to have Kevin as a Melbourne Star.

“He’s a proven competitor and I am confident that he will revel in the fiercely competitive atmosphere of the BBL and will be especially at home at the MCG in front of our loyal Members.”

Edinson Cavani expected to sign for Manchester United

Edinson Cavani linked with Manchester United transfer..

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is likely to join Manchester United this summer, as Paris Saint-Germain free up the necessary funds to sign Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria for up to €80 million.

This is according to Spanish newspaper Marca, who claim that the transfer of Cavani to Old Trafford is now "more than probable". PSG have subsequently been given the green light to press on with plans to sign Di Maria, who was also on the radar of the Red Devils until recently.

Cavani speculation

Speculation over Cavani's future has been intense since the middle of last season, with the prolific Uruguayan forward reportedly unhappy about being played out on the right flank, in order to accommodate star teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, by PSG boss Laurent Blanc.

Last week it was claimed that Blanc and Cavani held positive talks, with the former promising a change in tactics ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

However, with the Parisians intent on securing the services of Di Maria, it seems Cavani will be offloaded to Manchester United in order to finance the deal for the Argentina international.

United's Cavani pursuit: Brilliant or bizarre?

If Marca's reports are accurate and Manchester United do sign Cavani for a club-record fee over the forthcoming weeks, then questions over Louis van Gaal's transfer policy will inevitably arise.

United are already well-stocked in attack - with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez at Van Gaal's disposal - and all are capable of either playing either on their own or with a partner in a variety of systems.

Cavani will not agree to move to Old Trafford unless he is guaranteed a starting spot, which would result in Van Gaal dropping one of the aforementioned strikers in order to accommodate the South American.

But there's no doubting Cavani's pedigree. The 27-year-old scored 25 goals in 43 matches during his debut season with PSG, and netted a stunning 104 goals in 138 games in his three years with Serie A giants Napoli.

Watch: Edinson Cavani in action

Other clubs keen on Cavani

But, with PSG keen to sell Cavani as quickly as possible, United only have a short period of time to complete a transfer before another club attempts to secure his services.

- although a move is only likely to happen if Jose Mourinho sells either Fernando Torres or Romelu Lukaku - while the odds of Liverpool signing the player have plummeted over the past 24 hours after the Reds failed to land France international Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers.

Liverpool have significant funds to spend after selling Luis Suarez to Barcelona for £75 million - and manager Brendan Rodgers may attempt to fill the void left by the prolific Uruguayan by signing his revered international teammate.

Rory McIlroy heads to Ohio for WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

Open champion Rory McIlroy heads to Akron, Ohio this week aiming to add a WGC title to his increasing trophy collection as the 2014 PGA Tour season begins to reach to its conclusion.

The now triple-Major winner, who completed a wire-to-wire victory at Royal Liverpool last week to become only the third Northern Irishman to win the Claret Jug, made it three legs of four in his quest for the career Grand Slam at Hoylake - and now just needs a Green Jacket to complete the set.

However, in the meantime, there is this week's Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone - where Tiger Woods will be the defending champion - as well as the US PGA Championship at Valhalla, scene Team USA's last Ryder Cup victory, a week later.

Keep winning

And McIlroy is as hungry as ever to end the 2014 season strongly - much like he did in 2012 following his PGA win at Kiawah Island.

"I just want to think ahead and go forward and try to win as many tournaments and as many Majors as I can, because I feel like there's a lot more left in me.

"After my second Major at Kiawah, I kicked on for another six months and played really well. I want to be able to be the guy who goes on and wins Majors regularly and wins tournaments," he added.

Woods' formidable record

Despite winning three Majors so early in his career, McIlroy has never tasted victory in a World Golf Championship event, and will have to overcome several in-form players this week, as well as a formidable Firestone record held by defending champion Woods; the 14-time Major winner has won no less than eight times at the Ohio course.

Related articles

That said, he has played just six rounds of competitive golf since March following back surgery on a pinched nerve that ruled him out of the season's two Major championships at Augusta and Pinehurst, and McIlroy's main challengers are more likely to come from a European contingent that are finding form ahead of September's Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

Spain's Sergio Garcia pushed his Cup teammate all the way at Hoylake just over a week ago, while Englishman Justin Rose had won back-to-back tournaments at Congressional and Royal Aberdeen in the build up to the 143rd Open.

The man to beat

World number three Henrik Stenson finished runner up to Woods last time out in Akron, while Germany's Martin Kaymer will be seeking to rediscover the form that saw him run away with the US Open title in mid-June.

2014 Open champion McIlroy, though, is undoubtedly the man to beat at the season's final WGC, because when he is on form, there is arguably no one better in the world.

Having tasted success at the 2012 PGA that triggered a season-ending hot streak which included victories at two FedEx Cup tournaments, before sealing the season with a win in Dubai at the DP World Tour Championship, McIlroy will be eager to repeat the trick of two years ago... before helping Paul McGinley and co add another Ryder Cup to Europe's cabinet.

Ben Amos criticised by Louis van Gaal

Louis van Gaal not happy..

Manchester United recorded a second successive win under Louis van Gaal with victory over Roma on Saturday, but the new manager was far from pleased with the performance of his side at Denver’s Sports Authority Field.

Roma fightback

Wayne Rooney scored either side of a goal by Juan Mata, which the England striker provided, but Van Gaal was left frustrated as Roma were able to reduce the deficit to only one goal when Manchester United had appeared comfortable.

The former Netherlands coach claimed all of his creative players “failed” to perform to his standards, while he was critical of the manner in which Roma first go on the scoresheet courtesy of Miralem Pjanic.

Pjanic goal irritates Van Gaal

While it was a goal that represented something of a once in a career moment for Pjanic, with the Bosnian firing in from his own half, it was a moment that will haunt Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Amos.

And as if Amos was not quite feeling sorry enough for himself already, the 24-year-old third-choice 'keeper also had to endure the criticism of his manager, who suggested even he would have saved Pjanic’s effort.

Van Gaal told reporters: “I am nearly 63 years old and I run when the ball is flying four seconds, 50 metres. What do you think?”

Watch: Pjanic scores from his own half against Manchester United

Two games remaining

Next up for Van Gaal and Manchester United is an encounter against Inter Milan at FedExField in Washington, before the face Real Madrid in Washington for the final game of this US tour.

It is a pre-season jaunt that would appear unlikely to be repeated in a year, with Van Gaal having already stated his displeasure at the amount of travelling involved - something at odds with comments made by Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Karim Benzema rejects move to Liverpool

Karim Benzema has rejected a move to Liverpool.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has rubbed salt into the wounds of Liverpool by hinting they are not a big enough club to secure his services. The Reds enquired about the France international’s services a fortnight ago, but were left embarrassed when his agents indicated they were not on their client’s elite wish-list.

This is according to the Daily Star, who claim that Real Madrid are prepared to sell the 26-year-old after spending £65 million on Colombia star James Rodriguez from AS Monaco.

Liverpool seeking Luis Suarez replacement

Liverpool have already spent big-money acquiring the signature of exciting 20-year-old Serbia international Lazar Markovic from Benfica - and are also close to tying up deals for Loic Remy, from Queens Park Rangers, and Lille’s Belgium international Divock Origi.

However, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is hoping to sign a high-profile like-for-like replacement for the departed Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona for around £75 million earlier this summer.

The Uruguay international finished last season as the Premier League’s top scorer - and Rodgers knows that replacing his goals will be nigh-on impossible unless big money is spent on a world-class replacement.

Watch: Benzema's best goals

Arsenal: Benzema’s likely destinations?

Arsenal, along with the likes of Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, have been linked with £40 million-rated Benzema in recent months and may now fancy their chances of landing the prolific Frenchman.

Chelsea are less likely to sign Benzema, having brought club legend Didier Drogba back to Stamford Bridge, while PSG are currently preoccupied with striking a deal for the Real Madrid star’s teammate Angel di Maria.

Benzema could be forced out of the Bernabeu if Real Madrid secure the services of Colombia international Radamel Falcao, who could join Los Blancos on an initial season-long loan deal before a permanent transfer is completed.

London Welsh seal signing of James Down

.

London Welsh have signed second-row forward James Down from Cardiff Blues as their intense summer recruitment continues.

Down - who has yet to earn his first Welsh cap - becomes the 24th new player to sign for the club as they look to maintain their Aviva Premiership status after they were promoted from the Championship.

Potential

The 24-year old impressed whilst playing for Llantwidt Fadre as a youngster and attracted the attention of Exiles head coach Justin Burnell, before he went on to play for both Cardiff Blues and Cardiff RFC.

Burnell said: "I always thought James had a huge amount of potential.

"Coming through the Blues system he played alongside the likes of Bradley Davies and Lou Reed, who have both gone on to be full internationals. I still believe James has the potential to do that."

Fantastic addition

The news comes after the likes of All Black World Cup winner Piri Weepu, Argentinian prop Pablo Henn and Lachlan McCaffrey all joined the club.

Burnell said: "He's played a lot of rugby in different competitions with Cardiff Blues and he's another fantastic addition to our squad.

"He's very much in the Matt Corker mould and like Matt he's got a great understanding of the line-out and the kick off, and he's very good in the contact area.

"I'm really pleased to have someone of James' calibre on board, pushing the players already within our squad and helping to add to the competitive edge."

Missed out

Despite the continued arrivals at the club, they have missed out on signing Welsh star Adam Jones.

The 33-year old was the subject of rumours that he would be coming to the Kassam Stadium, but to the disappointment of London Welsh his management company, Big Red Management, dispelled any transfer whispers on Twitter.

"No truth in @adamjones3 going to @LondonWelshRFC. Matters should become clearer in next few days," they wrote.

A number of clubs have been linked with the British and Irish Lion including Bristol, Toulon and Saracens.

Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance put England in command

A captain's knock: Cook frustrated both India and his critics (©GettyImages).

Alastair Cook hit the knock he and his country so desperately needed on day one of the third Test at the Ageas Bowl as the captain led England into a position of supremacy against India.

A timely return to form

England scored slowly throughout the day, but took control as India looked increasingly frustrated. Despite losing opening partner Sam Robson early on for 26, Cook was able to steady the ship, aided by some much-welcomed good fortune.

The captain was dropped at first slip with just 15 on the scorecard, but took advantage of his change in luck to reach 95. Though agonisingly short of his first century since May 2013, amid much scrutiny of his captaincy, Cook will not need to be reminded of the significance of his innings.

He was eventually caught behind, having only just edged the ball to Mahendra Singh Dhoni off the bowling of Ravi Jadeja. That he was the driving force behind a good day at the crease will prove little to detractors of his captaincy, yet the affection with which he was received in Hampshire as he headed back to the pavilion will live long in the memory, particularly for his superiors at the ECB.

Ballance is Mr Reliable again

Nonetheless, Gary Ballance was able to go one better, notching up 104 not out, while attracting considerably less attention. The Yorkshireman’s cautious approach paid dividends, and his century – his third ton of the summer already – must not be overlooked, even if he was under less pressure.

As for India, coach Duncan Fletcher will be disappointed that his bowlers could not make more of a fairly green pitch. Debutant Pankaj Singh came in for the star of the second Test, Ishant Sharma, and was particularly unlucky not to get his first Test wicket, hindered by some poor fielding.

Selection issues

England coach Peter Moores was forced to make some big decisions regarding team selection, but proved he is not afraid to do so.

Liam Plunkett could reasonably have felt aggrieved upon reading the team sheet; after being arguably England’s best player in the second Test, he has been sacrificed somewhat harshly, along with Ben Stokes, who had admittedly been struggling.

Chris Jordan and Chris Woakes entered the dressing room on their behalf, hoping to bring the change required to help England level the series.

While there are still four days left, at stumps there was a resounding feeling around the ground that this Test could be the turning point in England’s longest run without a win in 21 years.

Those hopes will be boosted as long as the sight of a tired, beleaguered England captain looks a thing of the past. It is difficult to recall such an impressive captain’s performance under such pressure. A much-needed confidence boost for England’s top order was ultimately the story of the day.

Bernhard Langer cruising to Senior Open victory

Langer is eight shots clear (©GettyImages).

Bernhard Langer will take a commanding eight shot lead into the final day of the Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl.

The German shot a third round of 68 after making four birdies and a single bogey on Saturday and sits on 14 under par with one round remaining.

Victory procession

Langer has led throughout the tournament and has made just three bogey during his 54 holes so far and he looks to close in on a comfortable victory. He finished runner-up last year after throwing away a two shot lead on the final hole before eventually losing in a play-off.

But Langer doesn't look like throwing away his current lead as he strolled through the Welsh course in the hot conditions on Saturday.

Related Articles

He carried on from a good second round on Friday by extending his lead to eight shots after just two holes. A testing green on the second hole was negotiated by Langer as he holed an impressive 30 foot putt to claim his first birdie.

Excitement

Langer admitted that he virtually has the trophy won and is excited to be in this position with one round left. However, he is wary of the wind that prove difficult tomorrow.

“The title is probably in my hands but there is a lot of golf left to play," Langer said.

“This is a tough course and there should be a lot of wind tomorrow so I’m still going to have to hit a lot of good golf shots and stay out of trouble.

He continued: “It’s very exciting to be in the running for the only major on the European Tour.

“It’s a beautiful trophy and an amazing title so it would be exciting to win it again.”

Missed Eagle putt

Things could have been even better for Langer after he missed an eagle putt on the 18th and had to settle for a birdie. The 56 year old was happy with the distance of his drives, especially his last one of the day.

"I hit some good drives," said Langer to Sky Sports.

"The one at 18, I still can't believe how far that went. But that's how it is right now, it's very bouncy and firm and I was very fortunate not to end up in a bunker there on 18."

Langer won the last senior major - the Players Championship last month and will be hoping to win his second Senior Open after winning the 2010 event at Carnoustie.

Gibson 'challenge'

Canada's Rick Gibson is the nearest challenger after a five under par 66 while Colin Montgomerie is 11 behind Langer after a 72.

Montgomerie is seeking to emulate Gary Player by winning three senior major titles in a single season but has struggled to regain the form that saw his win the US Senior Open and USPGA Championship earlier this year.

A double bogey on the 10th followed by a bogey on the 11th made it difficult for the 51 year old to recover to save his round.

Monty fades

He did get to within seven shots of Langer at one stage but after being tied in second overnight, Mongomerie will be disappointed to be so far behind.

Langer admits he was always wary of Montgomerie but is glad to have kept the distance.

"I think at one stage Monty got to within seven but it was always about that mark. That was always my goal, not to relinquish any shots to the rest of the field. I only increased [the lead] by one but it's better than the other way around," Langer concluded.

Andy Murray: Women should play best of five sets

World number 10 Andy Murray held a question and answer session on his Facebook page on Friday afternoon, where he agreed with the idea that women should play best of five set matches in Grand Slams, as well as answering more light-hearted questions.

The British number one regularly gives his supporters the chance to interact with him on the social networking website, and he fielded the questions while on a break from his training programme in Miami.

A majority of the questions that the former Wimbledon champion answered were on subjects outside of tennis, as Murray revealed his current weight of 182 pounds and that he would prefer deep sea diving to bungee jumping among other things.

Opinion

On a more serious note, when asked whether women should play five sets in Grand Slams, the 27-year-old answered: “second week i think it should happen for sure”.

Another fan asked whether the Dunblane-born player ever breaks from his strict diet while training to drink in beer gardens or eat curry, to which he replied: “i have been known to pop into the beer garden from time to time”.

The former world number two had no time for questions with obvious answers, which included answering “no” to being questioned on whether he would like to win another Grand Slam, as well as stating that “tennis racquets” are the most important item in his kit bag.

Training

Murray is currently training in Miami in preparation for his participation in the hard court season, and he is yet to play in a tournament since relinquishing his Wimbledon title earlier in July, when he lost in the quarter-finals to Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov.

His first taste of action since that defeat will come at the Toronto Masters, which begins on Monday August 2nd, before playing in another ATP Masters 1000 series event in Cincinnati the following week, as he looks to build some form ahead of the US Open at the end of August.

There is still a chance that Murray could be seeded in the top eight for the final Grand Slam of the year in New York, though he is yet to win a singles title since becoming the first British male to win the men’s singles title in 77 years in 2013.

A loss in form since then has been coupled with back surgery which forced him to miss the end of the 2013 season, though he will have few ranking points to defend going into the latter stages of the year.

The break between Wimbledon and the US Open has allowed Murray more time to work with his new coach Amelie Mauresmo, who he appointed in June after parting company with his previous coach Ivan Lendl in March.

Barbados hoping to shine in Commonwealth Games

The small nation have a difficult task in the Rugby sevens (©GettyImages).

In a global competition there always sits an underdog, in the Confederations Cup we had Tahiti and in the World Cup it was Costa Rica; now Barbados are looking to light up the 2014 Commonwealth games in the Rugby sevens.

This small nation holds 1,700 eligible players and five clubs within its nation, as their place in this years' Commonwealth games was due to Nigeria dropping out of the tournament and even though they didn't earn a place this hasn't dampened their spirits.

Barbados

Jordan Gomez and Phil Lucas, two players originated from England, spoke to Talking Rugby News about the amount of joy they hold for representing their country in Barbados' Commonwealth debut, and how their dreams are coming true.

"I think we were all pretty shocked when we got the call. It was a real no-brainer when we were offered the spot," said Jordan Gomez.

"What a fantastic occasion for us! There are so many boys who have put their hearts and souls into this team and to go and represent the few hundred thousand back home in Barbados is a great achievement. We are really looking forward to it."

This may be a momentous occasion for some of the players, especially those who play their rugby in the Caribbean Islands, but their pool speaks in high volumes as the sevens team will take on the hosts Scotland, New Zealand and Canada.

Spirit

But one thing the public have noticed is never underestimate a team of small proportions because they could deliver an upset. We've seen this on many occasions within global tournaments; a team passed off as an easy win who causes a shock result.

The fact Barbados are eager to begin this tournament shows their enthusiasm and passion to what they are about to achieve, as Phil Lucas went on to speak about how half of the team originates from England but they are still a close-knit bunch.

“At the moment it’s pretty much half and half for us; we have about eight to ten UK-based players and about 17-20 Bajan players," Lucas said.

“I think that’s been great for us to gel as a team and hopefully perform at the Commonwealth Games.”

Underdogs

Everyone loves an underdog because they have a spirit and fight that other teams don't, and we've seen them display moments of magic that have shocked the tipped 'better' opposition.

The most recent example was Caribbean team Costa Rica in the 2014 World Cup, having been put in the group with Italy, Uruguay and England, many fans believed that this was an easy three points, but how wrong they were.

The small nation propelled into the knockout stages before losing on penalties to Netherlands in the quarter finals.

This showed teams like Barbados are not to be ignored as heart and tenacity can go a long way in sport, especially if the team work well together as well as being playing in an organised fashion.

What people have to realise though is Rugby Sevens is a challenging game and is completely different to your usual game of Rugby, there are more gaps on the field and stamina, strength and mental awareness play a huge factor in winning a game.

Willingness is key and experience could help as we are seeing players like Scotland's Stuart Hogg and Bryan Habana of South Africa, who is on stand-by, both named in this years' tournament for their nations.

Barbados may bring a surprise package or crash out at the group stages, but one thing for sure is that debuts rarely go to plan.

Arturo Vidal's agent to discuss Manchester United offer

Vidal was limited at the World Cup with a knee complaint.

Arturo Vidal's agent Fernando Felicevich will arrive in Italy today and hold talks with Juventus CEO Beppe Marotta to discuss a move to Manchester United.

According to Italian reports in Tuttosport, Felicevich's goal is to determine Juventus's willingness to negotiate with Manchester United over a transfer. The agent wants to know the full extent of the contact between Juve and United regarding his client.

Talks in Turin

The report claims he believes he can facilitate negotiations between the two clubs by ensuring that Juve receive no less than £45m for the midfielder. Vidal is keen on a move to United, and will also meet with his agent this weekend to get an update.

But the talks between Felicevich and Marotta will be crucial, as both sides put everything on the table. Felicevich wants full disclosure on any and all offers for Vidal this summer, including any offers from clubs other than United.

Other options?

The Chilean international has also been heavily linked with Liverpool and Real Madrid. Brendan Rodgers wants a 'marquee signing' following the £75m departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

He's closing in on the capture of Dejan Lovren from Southampton, but he wants a big name to bolster the squad and get the fans excited ahead of the new season.

No pressure

United meanwhile remain in the hunt for Vidal, although there's no pressure on their part to rush through a deal. Louis Van Gaal has already secured Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw - two important additions - and he has more than a month of the transfer window remaining.

Rafael Nadal to retain the US Open?

While some players continue to take a break between Wimbledon and the run-in to the US Open, it creates a period for thought on how the rest of the year will pan out going into the second hard court season of the year.

There are vital ranking points to play for before the tournament at Flushing Meadows, which is the final Grand Slam of the year and begins on Monday August 25th.

Ravindra Jadeja fined over altercation with James Anderson

India spinner Ravindra Jadeja has received a 50% match fee fine for his heated encounter with James Anderson during the first Test against England at Trent Bridge, according to BBC Sport.

However, the 25-year-old has avoided suspension, a sanction that could still impact the Lancashire seamer when he has his hearing on August 1.

Guilty

The International Cricket Council has now punished Jadeja, after they came to the conclusion that he exhibited “conduct contrary to the spirit of the game.”

Former Australian batsman David Boon was the match referee for the first Test, and he was tasked with deciding how to deal with the spinner, after he and Anderson came together on their way off the field for lunch.

Boon decided to downgrade Jadeja’s actions to a level on offence, having met with both players for a two-and-a-half hour hearing.

Confrontation

It was alleged that both players had words with one another during the morning session on day two of the opening Test match. That preceded an apparent push by Anderson as they walked into the pavilion.

However, the England international claimed that Jadeja approached him in a “threatening manner.”

That Test match was drawn, before India beat England by 95 runs in the second Test at Lord’s. The game was concluded when Jadeja ran out last man Anderson for 2 with a direct hit.

With both men out in the middle, a handshake was then recorded between the two.

Anderson

Whilst Jadeja has now been dealt with, James Anderson still has to wait to see what his punishment will be. However, it is likely that it will be more severe than just a 50% match fine.

England’s second-highest all-time leading Test wicket taker will have his fate decided by ICC judicial commissioner Gordon Lewis next week. Anderson is currently looking at a maximum four-match ban. Whilst he is available for the third Test at the Ageas Bowl – which starts on Sunday – he may be suspended for the final two games in the five-match series.

Void

The 31-year-old may be missing at his home ground when the fourth Test commences at Old Trafford on August 7. Without their premier strike bowler, England may find it even harder to find their way out of a 10-match winless run.

Having already taken 21 wickets in England’s four home Tests this summer, Anderson would be a big miss for Alastair Cook’s side. If he receives the maximum ban of four matches, then he could also miss all of England’s two-match series with New Zealand next May.

Manchester United v AS Roma: Live team sheet

Van Gaal looks to repeat the trick against Roma.

Louis Van Gaal has set the standards high at Manchester United after his debut 7-0 victory over the LA Galaxy.

He looks to repeat the trick tonight against slightly more accomplished opposition as United take on AS Roma at 21:06 BST in the International Champions Cup in Denver, Colorado.

The Galaxy win was hugely encouraging ahead of the new season and Van Gaal will be looking for more of the same this evening ahead of friendlies against Inter Milan and Real Madrid next week.

More Herrera please

United fans got a first look at new signing Ander Herrera against the MLS side, and they will have enjoyed what they saw. The Spaniard provided three assists during the match, and looked like exactly the sort of player United were missing last year.

Luke Shaw also made his United debut, and the England international was the subject of Jose Mourinho's first attempt at mind games over the new United boss this week.

Mourinho on Shaw

Mourinho said a Chelsea move for Shaw would have 'killed' the dressing room at Stamford Bridge because of his reported £100,000-a-week wages, to which Van Gaal responded by saying he will have a chat with the Chelsea boss in private to settle the issue.

A classy move from the United boss - it would be unwise to engage Mourinho in these sorts of back-and-forths before the season has even begun.

United's team has been announced for the match against Roma though, and that's why you're here - so here's the starting XI...

Neil Harman admits to plagiarism in Wimbledon annual

Harman was well respected by professionals on the tour (©GettyImages).

Neil Harman, tennis correspondent for the Times, has resigned from his position on the International Tennis Writers Association, after admitting to plagiarising material when writing the official Wimbledon annual.

It was first reported that Harman had plagiarised material by Private Eye (the article is not currently online), who claimed that he had lifted copy from a number of other journalists in the 2013 book, and it was removed from bookshelves at Wimbledon by the end of the tournament.

Officials at SW19 called a meeting with Harman in spring earlier this year, where they questioned him on accusations that he had not attributed material taken from other writers in the 2013 edition.

Resignation

Harman then admitted to the offence, and later wrote a letter to the ITWA to offer his resignation.

He wrote: "It has been brought to my attention that I have severely compromised my position as a member, having used unattributed material to form part of my writing of the Wimbledon Yearbook.

"There can be no excuse for such shoddy work, which I deeply regret. I did it without malice aforethought, but that I did it at all is simply inexcusable.”

Examples of this were the copying of an article written by John Wertheim, a writer for Sports Illustrated, about a women’s singles quarter-final match between Marion Bartoli and Sloane Stephens, which read almost exactly the same.

The 57-year-old journalist has written the annual about the grass court Grand Slam since 2004, and it is believed that he has plagiarised material in more than just the 2013 edition.

Further investigation

A further investigation by Ben Rothenberg for Slate Magazine claims that the 2011 and 2012 editions were also heavily plagiarised, and Rothenberg believes that there are at least 52 examples of lifted copy in the past three editions, with 28 being from the Guardian, while also claiming that there were two cases where Harman plagiarised his own work.

Another example was another almost word-for-word copying of a report by the Guardian’s Barney Ronay on Sergiy Stakhovsky’s shock second round win over Roger Federer at last year’s tournament.

Stakhovsky tweeted his support for Harman, who is well respected by a number of professionals on the tour.

The Ukrainian tweeted: “Well I challenge all of you to write a story which was never written before..regarding tournament with 125y(year) history.”

The All England Club did not assign Harman to write the 2014 edition, though they continued to sell his previous edition during this year’s tournament, despite already being aware of the situation.

He remained welcome this year, as he was still given press accreditation to the tournament and was invited to the champions dinner, which is an exclusive event, while he also wrote an article about then defending champion Andy Murray for the official tournament programme.

Harman took over as chief tennis correspondent for the Times in 2002, after previously working as chief football correspondent for the Daily Mail.

The Times are yet to make a public comment on the situation, and it is unclear whether Harman will remain in his position with the newspaper.
