Jelena Jankovic rescued by fan after bra strap snap

Serbian Jelena Jankovic has negotiated an embarrassing on-court wardrobe malfunction thanks to a compassionate lady in the crowd.

The World No. 9 was fighting out her second round match against American Sloane Stevens on Thursday at the Rogers Cup in Montreal when her bra strap snapped midway through the first set.

With the point won after her opponent sent a hasty forehand crashing into the net, Jankovic’s attention quickly turned from the match to her left shoulder as every woman’s worst nightmare became her reality.

Embarrassment

With a sheepish look on her face, the former World No. 1 approached the chair umpire Emanuel Joseph to alert him of the unfortunate situation and, rather pessimistically, seek his assistance.

Hardly a man of experience in such circumstances, the Frenchman could do little to spare her blushes despite his best efforts to repair the broken garment.

As the Serb looked for someone more able to end the nightmare, the Montreal crowd laughed and cheered in good spirit while one man even shared a joke with her as he snapped a few pictures of the ordeal with his camera phone.

A woman’s touch

Just when a trip to the changing rooms looked inevitable, a female spectator emerged from the audience to offer Jankovic the feminine touch required to promptly tie the strap together.

The 29-year-old re-entered the fray armed and ready with her makeshift bra strap and marched on to the third round with a 7-6 (9-7) 4-6 7-7 (7-4) victory.

Third round exit

Jankovic returned to the court barely 24 hours later to took on another American in Coco Vandeweghe in the third round yesterday.

Even without a flimsy bra strap to worry about it, the 2008 US Open finalist bundled out of the Montreal event at the third round for second year running.

US Open preparation

Jankovic will play her final tournament in preparation for the concluding Grand Slam of the year at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. She is more than capable of summoning her best tennis on the hard courts of Ohio, having won the event in 2009 and finishing runner-up in 2011.

Even with one of her favoured tournaments left to contend, Jankovic will likely head to Flushing Meadows without a title to her name in 2014. She last won a singles event in February 2013 at the Claro Open in Bogota, Colombia.
