Rojo could well leave Sporting.. Sporting Lisbon have been warned by the company that own 75% of the rights to Marcos Rojo, Doyen Sports, to let the player join Manchester United or face financial consequences.
Goal today claims that the Portuguese giants have been told that they will have to pay £12 million to Doyen if they continue to reject the advances coming from Old Trafford, which could be enough to force them to sell.
A contractual agreement is already place which forces Sporting to pay 75% of any bid they reject for Rojo to Doyen, meaning that United’s current bid of £16 million stands to earn the company £12 million, even though it would mean Louis van Gaal’s club missing out.
Rojo situation
This follows rumours that Sporting were to sanction Rojo with a penalty after he refused to train in order to ensure that he is perfectly fit to undertake a medical if it comes to it. It’s said in the wake of United’s bid that the Argentina international has asked his club to give him the move he is looking for, but as of yet his pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
The 24-year-old is said to be desperate to further his own ambitions by moving to Manchester, and Van Gaal is equally as keen to see the switch come to fruition following the injury sustained by Luke Shaw.

The boost
Therefore both parties will have been boosted by Doyen’s stance that Sporting need to let Rojo go and, at least from the outside looking in, it would seem that the club find themselves in a position where they have little choice.
“(Sporting are) making mindless demands as a condition of releasing the player,” Doyen are reported as having said in a statement.
“If Sporting want to keep Rojo they must compensate the fund under the terms and deadlines set forth by the contract. If necessary we will not hesitate to use every legal resource at our disposal to fully defend our rights and interests.”
What now?
Moving forward it would seem that United are all but set to land Rojo, so long as they continue to apply the pressure with regards to their intent to land him. Since Van Gaal’s interest was first registered they have doggedly tried to convince Sporting to sell and, despite the fact their offer is well short of his £24 million release clause, it would seem their European rivals are backed into a corner.
With Sporting’s financial backing not altogether that strong there’s serious doubts lingering over the possibility of them remaining defiant and simply paying Doyen off in order to keep Rojo in their squad. It’s far more feasible that they will indeed let the full-back join United, which will subsequently improve Van Gaal’s chances of getting off to a good Premier League start.
Shaw’s injury means youngster Reece James will likely start in the left wingback role against Swansea on Saturday, but the Dutchman desires a more experienced option.
