Golfing World News - September 4

GW News: Rory’s 400 Yard Drive (©GettyImages).

We start with the third leg of the FedExCup Playoffs: The BMW Championships, at Cherry Hills Country Club, Colorado. A certain Rory McIlroy has been wowing crowds with his length off the tee, over-shooting the 298 yard range despite organisers placing a 90 foot net at the back of it. The altitude of the course means shots are generally flying up to 10% further than they do at sea level, though Rory is being careful to use his length wisely:

"It's funny, this course doesn't really allow you to hit it that far. There's not many opportunities where you can just hit driver and see how far it goes. You really need to place your ball in the fairway here. I did hit a three-wood today 370. So, that was pretty. But yeah, the ball is going forever. It really is. And obviously, the altitude, and then it heated up for us on back nine, as well. So, it's going a good, for me, because of my high ball flight, it's going a good 15 percent further than it usually does."

To the Europe now, and it’s the European Masters in Switzerland this weekend where defending champion Thomas Bjorn will be hoping to continue his superb form this season. Bjorn has the opportunity to equal Seve Ballesteros’ three European Masters wins, but doubts he can create the magic that the legendary Spaniard did, in Crans Montana:

THOMAS BJORN: "What Seve did here and the memories of him here is so special and if I won it ten times I don't think I would even get close to the memories of what he did. So for me it's just a question of trying to get out there and win a golf tournament and try and play the best I can and that's difficult any time of the year to win tournaments. So just be patient and get out there. I have got a good eye for the golf course, I like this place, I've been successful in the past, but that doesn't count for anything when the tournament starts."

Well that’s all for today. Join us tomorrow when we’ll be rounding up the first round of competition across the tours. In the meantime don’t forget you can check out our latest videos on our new website golfingworld.tv and we’re on Facebook and Instagram too. Bye for now.
