Saracens kick off the Premiership season against Wasps at Twickenham (©GettyImages). The London Saracens go into their opening match against Wasps off the back of a 3-47 win over Bedford Blues. They will be hoping to win some form of silverware this season after failing to win either of the two finals they were in last season.

Last season’s double disappointment
Last season Saracens made it to both the Heineken Cup final and the Aviva Premiership final. However, they were unable to win either.
The first of these two finals was the Heineken Cup final in Cardiff against Toulon. Saracens lost the game 23-6 in Johnny Wilkinson’s last game of European rugby.
A week later Saracens lost to Northampton Saints 20-24 in extra time in the Aviva Premiership Final at Twickenham.
This loss was a surprise to many people as it was thought that they had one of the strongest squad’s in the Premiership.
Steve Borthwick’s retirement
In November 2013 Saracens captain Steve Borthwick announced that he would retire at the end of the season. Borthwick made 125 appearances for Saracens after moving there from Bath in 2008.
In total, Borthwick ends his career with 253 Premiership appearances, the second highest of all time.
In 2008 Borthwick took over from Phil Vickery as captain of England. He was captain for two years and made 57 appearances for England.
Next season
Saracens are set to kick off next season against Wasps at the double header at Twickenham on September 6. Saracens have named South African Alistair Hargreaves as Bortwick’s replacement.
Saracens will be hoping that with Hargreaves leadership they can win both the Aviva Premiership and the European Champions Cup despite getting a tough draw in Europe.
