Tom Watson has announced his captains picks for the Ryder Cup (©GettyImages). Tom Watson has completed the roster for the U.S Ryder Cup team by selecting Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan, and Webb Simpson as his three captain picks.
Reports had suggested that Bradley and Mahan had firmly been in Watson's plans from the beginning but his decision to add Simpson to the roster wasn't decided until Tuesday morning, Watson later announced his selections that evening.
After making his announcement, Watson spoke to Golf Channel and explained: "It really came to me this morning," said Watson to Golf Channel. "I kind of had a revelation this morning."
Simpson surprise
Simpson was certainly ecstatic with the call up to U.S team for the 2014 Ryder Cup and he stated: "It was one of the greatest calls I've ever gotten, I was elated -- it was five in the morning. Unfortunately I didn't have anybody to celebrate with."
Simpson the most unlikely call up for the team was outstanding for his nation in 2012, the 29-year-old was 2-2-0 last time out, whilst also dispatching of two contests with a 5&4 win over european competition.
The three players selected by Watson have faired well in previous exploits in the Ryder Cup, they are a combined 8-5-3 in their careers, Bradley and Mahan with three wins each and Simpson providing two.
Bradley's redemption
Keegan Bradley has not been able to stop thinking about his chances for a Ryder Cup appearance and finally received the news that he had been waiting for, Watson had deemed him worthy of one of his captain picks for the squad.
Bradley told Golf Channel: "I've made no secret of how important this team is to me, I think this is a redemption year for a lot of guys who were on the team last year."
Bradley has not won a tournament in two years, however he went 3-0 in a partnership with Phil Mickelson two years ago at Medinah and chemistry between pairings is a vital aspect that Watson will no doubt have noticed.
Mahan and revenge
Redemption became a central theme to the attitude of the U.S. team, Hunter Mahan will certainly have this at the forefront of his mind as it was his chip in 2010 that fell short and ultimately gave the Europeans the Ryder Cup.
Mahan was certainly overjoyed to get the call up and he explained: "There's a lot of great players who could have made this team,It felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders."
However he certainly believes he and his US counterparts have something to prove this year, he continued: ""Europe has flat out kicked our butt in the last 10 or 15 years."
