Iker Casillas wants free transfer away from Real Madrid

Casillas wants out of Madrid..

Arsenal have been given the green light to sign Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas, as Spanish sources have revealed the goalkeeper is looking to move clubs for free this summer.

Spanish publication El Confidencial claims to have knowledge that the 33-year-old, who was positively woeful at the World Cup, is now seeking an exit from the Santiago Bernabeu and, despite the fact he wants a hefty contract, remains on Arsenal’s radar. Arsene Wenger is said to be keen on bringing in a top talent to provide competition for Wojciech Szczesny, who is currently the only recognised No.1 on the books at the Emirates Stadium.

Casillas’ misery

Since the latter stages of Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Madrid Casillas has been forced to play second fiddle to Diego Lopez, and his stock is at an all time low having had a big hand in Spain’s demise in Brazil. Now, regardless of the fact that he’s been playing first-team football for his current club since 1999 - and has a contract which runs until 2017 -, it’s believed the stopper is angling for a fresh start, and could well see the Premier League as the ideal place to rebuild his reputation.

Moving for free

El Confidencial claim that Casillas has asked Madrid to allow him to leave for nothing, so as not to deter any potential suitors. With Chilean ‘keeper Keylor Navas all set to arrive from Levante and Carlo Ancelotti offering no indication that his legendary ‘keeper will be his undisputed first-choice in between the sticks next season, it seems that Casillas has resolved to depart - a stance Madrid might not be too unhappy about.

All that remains to be seen now is whether or not Wenger will place his faith in a man many are claiming to be over the hill.
