Tennis legend's son arrested over drug deal

The son of seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe has been arrested on suspicion of buying drugs, according to the New York Post.

Kevin McEnroe was stopped by New York Police on the corner of East 4th Street and Avenue A at approximately 11:30 pm on Tuesday night, as he was caught buying drugs from 22-year-old Niro Meneses.

Possession 

Sources of the New York Post have claimed that the 28-year-old was found to be in possession of six bags of cocaine, 20 oxy pills, 10 morphine pills and one anxiety pill.

He was then brought to court and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, but was released without bail, and Meneses was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

Police found Meneses to be carrying 13 glassine envelopes of cocaine and three vials of the drug.

McEnroe was not in attendance at his son’s court arraignment, though his brother and Kevin’s uncle Mark was sat in the audience.

Addict

Kevin is the son of McEnroe and actress Tatum O’Neill, who has suffered from a heroin addiction in the past, and McEnroe took custody of their three children when she relapsed into heroin abuse four years after they divorced in 1994.

O’Neal was arrested herself for attempting to buy crack cocaine near her apartment in the Lower East Side of New York City in 2008, and she has admitted to battling against a drug addiction since the age of 14.

His mother called the 9th Precinct station after hearing of her son’s arrest, and it echoes her own situation, where she told the judge at that time that she planned to give up the drugs for good after pleading guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct.

Kevin’s 23-year-old sister Emily tweeted on Wednesday: “There was a time I I used to think you're either living or dying. Living was doing whatever you wanted. Dying was everything else.”

According to his Facebook profile, Kevin attended Trinity School in New York, a prep school with fees of $44,000, and he also attended Columbia University.

He now lives in Brooklyn and recently worked as a bartender at the now closed Broadway East bar.

McEnroe won three Wimbledon titles and four US Open titles, and he has made a new career as a TV pundit for both the BBC and ESPN since his retirement from the ATP tour in 1992, while O’Neal was the youngest person to win an Academy Award for her role in Paper Moon in 1973, when she was 10 years old.
