Long-term Manchester United target Marco Reus is said to be fuming with Barcelona’s decision to sign Luis Suarez this summer ahead of him, as he specifically turned down the Red Devils so that he could make a move to the Nou Camp.

And now Reus is reportedly angry with Barcelona for effectively leading him on, particularly because he chose to reject United when they came calling so that he would be available to be transferred to the Nou Camp. The 25-year-old reportedly wanted to link up with friend and compatriot Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, who has recently been signed to replace Victor Valdes.

It was well documented for some time that United were interested in the idea of luring Reus - who has a rumoured buyout clause of £28m - to the Premier League, and many thought that might well become the lynchpin of the side moving forward. Within the Express’ reports it’s confirmed that an offer was put forward by the Red Devils, only for Borussia Dortmund to knock it back because it didn’t meet their estimations of the player.

It’s then claimed that United were put off with regards to submitting an improved proposal because they had been made aware of Reus’ preference for Barcelona; hence the player’s annoyance.

Options for the future

With Louis van Gaal having taken over and already made significant headway with regards to his transfer plans, it remains to be seen whether or not United will reignite their interest in Reus given that they’ve prioritised the capture of Juventus star Arturo Vidal. There’s no doubting that the playmaker would improve the squad, but with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj all already fighting for places there really isn’t much need for him.

As for Reus himself he’ll certainly be regarded as Jurgen Klopp’s most valuable asset once more next season. With the Bundesliga giants looking to overthrow Bayern Munich as Germany’s top dogs they’ll not only need to recover from the loss of Robert Lewandowski but also ensure that no more of their best players leave.
