Tiger Woods revealed yesterday that the sacrum bone in his back became dislodged on Sunday, forcing him to end his final round prematurely.

What he is also reported to have said was that his physio “popped the bone back in,” whilst on the course during play, according to BBC Sport.

The WGC Bridgestone Invitational crowd were horrified as the golfer regularly screamed in pain after taking shots especially from out of the rough.

Despite this, the 14-time major winner is due play in the US PGA Championship that started today, ignoring the currently movable bones in his back.

Not his old self

At the turn of the 21st century Tiger Woods was playing golf that quite simply did not belong on this planet. His four US PGA titles (1999, 2000, 2006 and 2007) could be another reason that has tempted him to not drop out this time around.

His other major victories - four Masters, three US Opens and three Open Championships - were all before 2008 and his injuries and private life have been the cause for him to drop down the World rankings to number 10.

McIlroy favourite

The competition that Woods dropped out of was won by the increasingly impressive Rory McIlroy, who his on fire after winning The Open at Hoylake in Liverpool.

Many have tipped the Northern Irishman to win his third tournament on the spin and complete a back-to-back major win at Valhalla - the last time man to achieve this feat was Padraig Harrington in 2008.

McIlroy will begin his quest for victory with Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson today in a group where each man has tasted major glory before. Kaymer won this year’s US Open and US PGA Championship in 2010 and Bubba has two green jackets to his name.
