Cristiano Ronaldo has hailed Radamel Falcao's imminent move to Manchester United as a 'fantastic buy' for Louis Van Gaal.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Cristiano Ronaldo paid tribute to the signing of the Colombian international, who is joining for a reported £12m loan fee. United are believed to have agreed to pay his £200,000-a-week wages, something Arsenal and Manchester City refused to do.

Falcao looks set to join the likes of Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind at Old Trafford in a completely revamped squad.

Speaking at a TAG Heurer event in Madrid, Ronaldo said: "He is a very good player. I think Manchester did very well.

"I don't think he is the wrong type of player. He is a top player so I don't think it is a wrong buy. I think he will be a fantastic buy. Manchester have not started well, two points, so they need quality players and Falcao is a quality player."

Manchester City were believed to be closest to signing Falcao, with Arsenal also registering an interest. But when they heard his £200,000-a-week demands they pulled the plug on the deal.

But Manchester United, with Ed Woodward eager to placate a fan base keen for signings, seems to have pulled the trigger. The Old Trafford club have partially offset the deal by shipping off Javier Hernandez to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid were the frontrunners for Falcao at one stage, but they clearly baulked at his wage demands too and were only too happy to snap up the Mexican striker instead, who will be an excellent option off the bench for the Champions League winners.

Falcao's first game should be the visit of Queens Park Rangers to Old Trafford after the international break on September 16th.
