Liverpool have agreed a deal with Real Madrid which will see Karim Benzema move to Anfield for a sum totalling £38.8million, according to sensational reports.

The Daily Star, citing media in Spain, claims that Brendan Rodgers has approached Los Blancos chiefs and is confident he can get a deal done. It’s said the Northern Irishman has been told by the powers that be at the Santiago Bernabeu that Benzema is available for transfer, providing they meet Madrid’s estimations in terms of price.

Benzema interest

The France international was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League early on in the summer transfer window, with Arsenal also said to be considering a move for him. That speculation ended however when the forward penned a new five-year deal in Spain in July, prompting the theory that he was to be Carlo Ancelotti’s first-choice forward for the foreseeable future.

That now seems like a ploy by his club to maximise his transfer fee however, much like Manchester United’s decision to hand Nani a lengthy new contract last September. Benzema’s new deal means that he’ll cost far more than he otherwise might have done, and now remains to be seen whether any of his suitors are willing to pay that, plus his high wages.

Will Liverpool pay?

With Liverpool believed to be at the top of the list of clubs waiting to sign him, it could be an interesting transfer window next summer. Though a January sale is highly unlikely - purely through the lack of options Ancelotti has up top - a summer deal could be struck, with Los Blancos having a reputation for revamping their squad on an annual basis.

The Reds certainly have money to play with and despite the fact they’ve recently signed Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert, may well be in the market for a forward before too long. The start to their campaign this season hasn’t been nearly as impressive as last term, with many pointing fingers towards the departure of hit-man Luis Suarez.

Arsenal battle

They could face competition from Arsenal though, with Arsene Wenger always on the look out concerning improvements to be made to his team. The Frenchman has been a long-term admirer of Benzema’s talents and, following the recovery of the financial loss their self-funded stadium move inflicted, the coffers at the Emirates Stadium are looking very healthy indeed.

Their pursuit could hinge upon the form of Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck, and Liverpool may be given a free-run at Benzema if the Gunners duo are firing on all cylinders.
