Manchester United may have already completed preliminary medical checks on Arturo Vidal and that details over a deal to sign him from Juventus are close to being finalised.

According to Chilean outlet El Mercurial, Vidal is very close to agreeing a deal with the Old Trafford club and that a transfer, reported in some corners to be worth as much as £40million, should not take long to complete.

Advanced negotiations

El Mercurial also runs with reports from Italy that suggest the deal is so advanced that preliminary medical tests have been made on behalf of Manchester United in Italy. The report also claims that talks between the representatives of Vidal and the Premier League club were concluded quickly.

However, this report goes against what Juventus have been saying publicly about the prospect of Vidal leaving this summer. The club’s new manager, Massimiliano Allegri, this week insisted the Bianconeri had no desire to sell one of their prized assets this summer.

Allegri replaced Antonio Conte in the managerial hotseat midway through July after the three-time Serie A winning manager made a shock resignation and inherited one of the longest drawn out transfer sagas this summer.

While the Italian insisted Juventus were keen to hang on to the Chile international, he did not completely rule out a sale. Manchester United will have been encouraged by comments that hinted the 27-year-old could be granted a move if he asked for one.

Still hope

"The ideal thing would be not only to keep hold of Vidal but to bring others in," Allegri told reporters on Tuesday.

"We have never activated a clause to try to sell him and if he doesn't show an intention to leave, our position won't change. He is a player that I consider fundamental and he wants to stay here.”

United need more steel

Manchester United are in need of some experience and quality in their central midfield in front of the defence, as they have lost Michael Carrick to long-term injury and the other options in the middle have failed to fulfil the role of midfield destroyer effectively.

Darren Fletcher has played that position effectively in the past, but long-standing health issues mean new Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal is probably unable, not to mention unwilling, to rely on him being fit to play regularly for long periods.

Vidal would be perfect for Van Gaal as he would bring with him the combative skills and tactical intelligence of one of the world’s most effective box-to-box midfielders. The former Bayer Leverkusen star has good quality as well and would be able to dovetail effectively with new boy Ander Herrera in the middle, not to mention popping up with the odd goal.
