Alex Garcia woke up the Las Vegas crowd at UFC 207 with a massive knockout blow to Mike Pyle.

The two welterweights went head-to-head on the undercard of the final UFC event of 2016 and may __have just sneaked onto the knockout highlight reel.

Garcia came out as the aggressor from the bell of the first round and scored an early takedown on Pyle in an attempt to assert his dominance.

Alex Garcia def. Mike Pyle – first-round KO (3:34)
Niko Price def. Brandon Thatch – arm-triangle choke (R1: 4:30)
Alex Oliveira vs. Tim Means ruled no-contest

But the takedown was not well executed by Garcia and Pyle was easily able to escape and return to his feet.

Pyle may __have easily regained his feet, but he was soon out cold on the canvas when Garcia’s massive right hand connected brutally with his jaw.

Garcia held off on his celebrations before Pyle was conscious again and received treatment.

Pyle though was soon back up as Garcia followed up his loss to Sean Strickland in February with a win.

Garcia may have gotten his UFC career back on track, but Pyle has now suffered back-to-back defeats and has just one win from five UFC fights.

Reports suggest the Reds are weighing up a move for Oxlade-Chamberlain, with the 22-year-old struggling for minutes at the Emirates this campaign.

It’s believed the Merseyside outfit are eyeing up the England star as a potential replacement for the African Cup of Nations-bound Sadio Mane but Wenger has ruled out the signing.

When asked if the rumours were true on Friday morning, Wenger replied: ‘No.

Antonio Conte held secret talks with Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal over a move to Chelsea next summer, according to reports.

The Sun claim that the Chelsea boss spoke to the Chile international on Boxing Day, while the Premier League leaders are ready to submit a £34 million offer, although Bayern will hold out for a fee closer to £40m.

Conte has also switched targets from Radja Nainggolan to Vidal after Chelsea balked at Roma’s £51.5m asking price.

Vidal was signed by Conte for Juventus in 2011 and won three Serie A titles together during their time at the club.

REVEALED: The story of Eden Hazard playing his final game before joining Chelsea with a hangover

Eden Hazard was signed by Chelsea for £32m in June 2012. (AFP/Getty Images)

Eden Hazard’s final match before joining Chelsea left him worse for wear in more ways than one.

The Belgian joined Stamford Bridge in a £32 million deal from Lille in June 2012 after Chelsea fended off competition from Manchester United, Arsenal and Real Madrid.

Hazard was aware that Lille’s final game of the campaign against Nancy was going to be his last for the French club before his summer transfer.

And the midfielder was given a standing ovation from the Lille supporters and coaching staff as he was substituted in the 89th minute.

But Hazard’s preparation for his final game was drastically different to how he would usually approach matches.

Speaking on Le Vestiaire, Hazard’s former team-mate at Lille, Rio Mavuba, revealed how the squad had a night out on the town before the fixture, safe in the knowledge that they would finish third in Ligue 1, regardless of the result against Nancy.

‘The night before games we usually did nothing, but were were certain to finish third,’ explained Mavuba.

‘In the morning the coach [Rudi Garcia] went in Hazard’s room and he hasn’t been sleeping.’

But amazingly, Hazard signed off in style with a stunning performance and a hat-trick within 34 minutes during the first half.

Phil Jones admits PlayStation and food binges were killing his Manchester United career

Phil Jones reveals the bad habits that were killing his Manchester Unted career

Phil Jones has revealed ditching food binges and PlaysStation sessions __have helped resurrect his Manchester United career.

How Man Utd could've lined up if Moyes had got the players he'd been promised

The England international has endured a turbulent few years, with a steady stream of injuries preventing him from fulfilling the potential Sir Alex Ferguson had identified in him when he paid £17 million to Blackburn for his services in 2011.

A return to full fitness, however, has coincided in his longest unbroken run in the first team for nearly two years and the 24-year-old has played a prominent role in United’s defensive improvement in recent weeks.

Jones puts his progress down to a renewed application off the field and a more mature approach to his health and post-game recovery.

‘I think as I’ve got older I’ve become wiser to recovery and realised how important it is,’ he told United Review. ‘When I was younger you think you know it all and after games you probably just go for some food or sit on your PlayStation.

‘Now I take it a lot more seriously and recover properly because I know I need to give myself the best possible chance to be as fresh and as fit as I can for the next game.’

Despite the summer signing of Eric Bailly and impending arrival of Victor Lindelof, Jones is likely to remain a cornerstone of Jose Mourinho’s United rearguard, and the versatile defender admits he is thriving working alongside the former Chelsea boss.

On the subject of working with Mourinho, Jones continues: ‘It’s brilliant. He’s shown a lot of confidence and belief in me and hopefully I’m repaying that. I’m not a player who needs telling every day in training ‘you’re brilliant, you’re this, you’re that’… but it’s always nice to hear comments from the manager and people around that you’re doing well.

‘I’m not under any illusions though, in this game you can be up there one minute and down the next, so I need to keep going game by game and keep improving.’

Watch: Metro.co.uk’s fight of the year outside of the UFC happened in Singapore

Angela Lee made history for ONE championship in May (Picture: ONE)

It’s been a crazy year in the world of mixed martial arts and not just in the UFC.

What is spironolactone the banned drug UFC star Cyborg tested positive for?

A year of full of amazing fights, brave performances and superhuman efforts from many courageous men and women.

Picking Metro.co.uk’s fight of the year 2016 outside of the UFC was never going to be an easy task, but after much thought and deliberation there could only be one.

Angela Lee vs Mei Yamaguchi, ONE Championship – May 6

Back in May this year, one of the most pivotal moments in both ONE Championship and Women’s MMA history took place when Angela ‘Unstoppable’ Lee became ONE Championship’s first ever women’s atomweight champion.

She also became the youngest ever world champion in mixed martial arts at just 19 years of age.

While Lee’s win was notable for those achievements alone, what made it even more special was the way in which she won.

Truly Blessed. Forever Grateful. #BornForThis pic.twitter.com/nC13mEqI6h

— Angela Lee (@Unstoppable_Lee) December 14, 2016

The inaugural ONE Championship atomweight title fight was contested in the main event of ONE: Ascent To Power in Singapore with Lee taking on Japanese fighter, Mei Yamaguchi.

Lee, fighting in her home country of Singapore, was the big favorite heading into the fight, but for a period at least, the pressure of the occasion weighed heavy on her young shoulders.

Yamaguchi, a veteran of the sport with over twenty five professional fights, used all her experience to take the fight to Lee and on several occasions in both rounds two and three, the upset looked like it could happen.

Grateful to be getting in rolls with this amazing woman! Thank you for the rounds @mieshatate! 🙏🏼👊🏼💪🏼 #GirlPower #WMMA

Lee was put in deep waters like never before and in the third round she bravely negotiated a big storm after being knocked down and put in an armbar that couldn’t __have been any tighter.

She somehow prevailed and took the pace to a whole new level in rounds four and five to edge the decision on all three scorecards.

Portugal’s Eder proves unlikely man of 2016

Portugal, Euro 2016, Euro, Eder goal, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Ballon d Eder was a good bet as he helped Portugal win their maiden European Championship. (Source: Reuters)

Portugal emerged triumphant at Euro 2016 but it was surprise packages Wales and Iceland who supplied the best memories from the tournament in France.

Not many experts chose Fernando Santos’ team as likely title winners at the start while punters would hardly __have rushed to put money on his side when talisman Cristiano Ronaldo limped off in tears after 25 minutes of the July final against the hosts.

India vs England Live score

And had anyone asked fans of Swansea City whether Eder, who failed to score in 15 games for the English Premier League side before being farmed out to Lille, was a good bet to grab the winner they might __have countered by saying there was more chance of Brexit followed by Donald Trump becoming U.S. President.

But if 2016 taught us anything it is that unlikely characters can shape major events, on and off the football pitch.

Portugal’s final triumph came despite only producing one shot on target in 90 minutes plus two more in extra-time, an underwhelming end to a largely forgettable tournament where 22 of the 55 matches were goalless at halftime.

Similarities were drawn between Portugal and the Greece team that chugged to victory 12 years earlier and it was Wales and Iceland, who reached the semi-finals and quarter-finals respectively, who really captured the imagination of the Euro 2016 fans.

Iceland’s followers entertained everyone with their unique ‘Viking Thunder-Clap’ celebration.

It was not all good news among the crowds, however, with violence marring the lead-up to Russia’s game with England and several other unsavoury outbursts involving other countries.

England manager Roy Hodgson and Belgium coach Marc Wilmots paid with their jobs for failing to get the most out of their talented squads.

Italy’s Antonio Conte used Euro 2016 as a springboard, quickly forgetting the disappointment of his team’s quarter-final defeat by Germany to finish the year strongly with English league leaders Chelsea.

Portugal’s title success was particularly harsh on the player of the tournament, France forward Antoine Griezmann who produced several mesmerising performances and ended top scorer with six goals in seven games.

Less than two months earlier the same striker also lost out in the Champions League final with Atletico Madrid who went down on penalties to city rivals Real, Ronaldo this time taking centre stage to score the decisive penalty.

THIRD HONOUR

Ronaldo went on to bag a third honour in 2016, beating Barcelona rival Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d’Or for a fourth time.

Other winners in 2016 included Leicester City, who overcame odds of 5,000-1 to win their first top-tier title in England while Bayern Munich, Paris St Germain, Barcelona and Juventus were more predictable champions in Europe’s other top leagues.

Juve midfielder Paul Pogba left the club at the end of the season to rejoin former team Manchester United for a world record fee of 89.3 million pounds ($111.89 million).

United acquired a new manager in Jose Mourinho while Pep Guardiola took up residence at Manchester City as English football continued to draw the game’s top coaching talent.

It also attracted many foreign investors with Chinese businessmen snapping up several clubs as a country not known for its football tradition established a major foothold in an increasingly globalised game.

At home the Chinese Super League emerged as a likely destination for top footballers with around 200 million pounds spent on the likes of Graziano Pelle and Hulk.

According to media reports, Brazilian forward Hulk is earning 340,000 pounds per week, a salary bettered only by Ronaldo and Messi.

Off the field, Gianni Infantino was elected president of soccer’s governing body FIFA in place of the disgraced Sepp Blatter.

Infantino promised to “bring football back to FIFA” and also said he wanted to increase the number of teams that take part in the World Cup finals from 32 to 48.

All-Star voting tweaked to avoid bias towards big names

The NBA All-Star voting process has been tweaked in what appears to be an effort to encourage selection of players based on form rather than reputation.

Players previously were chosen entirely by fans, a situation that last season, for example, led to the selection of veteran Dwyane Wade, even though by his own high standards he was having a relatively mediocre season for the Miami Heat.

This season, selection will be based on voting by fans (50 percent), players (25 percent) and media (25 percent), the National Basketball Association announced on Monday.

The All-Star Game will be played in New Orleans on Feb. 19.

Abhinav Bindra says goodbye in bad year for seniors, youngsters shine

Abhinav Bindra, Bindra, Abhinav Bindra India, India shooters, Jitu Rai, Indian shooters at Rio Olympics, Shooting India, Shooting news, Shooting Abhinav Bindra is the only Indian athlete to __have won an Olympic gold. (Source: AP)

Perfectionist Abhinav Bindra walked into the sunset after a glorious career but, in an unfortunate coincidence, dark clouds hovered over a house in disorder after the Indian shooting team returned with only luggage to boast for following a barren Olympic campaign.

Bindra was not far away from a fairytale ending.

India vs England Live Score

India’s lone individual Olympic gold medallist till date, he quit the sport he loved dearly and practised with single-minded devotion over the last two decades, after winning plenty of laurels across the world.

Bindra officially announced his retirement from shooting in September, saying, “It is time to move on and hand over the baton to the younger generation”.

With the profile of the sport taking a beating of sorts post Rio, youngsters would do well take a leaf out of Bindra’s book of training.

The World Championship gold-medallist missed out on a second Olympic podium finish by a whisker in his last Games after losing in a tense shoot-off, but still he was by far the best Indian shooter on view in Rio.

It was appropriate that the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), governing body for the sport in the country, commemorated the glittering career of Bindra at a gala ceremony.

While the sport made noises outside, by the standards Indian shooters __have set over the years, it was quiet inside the ranges. Performing regularly gave way to winning a rare medal or two intermittently.

The debacle in Rio was the first time since 2004 that India finished without a medal at an Olympic Games, prompting the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) to formulate a review committee headed by Bindra immediately after the multi-sport extravaganza to examine and identify in a cold and ruthless manner the reasons behind the failure.

Besides the shooters, the panel was equally scathing on coaches and the national federation in its damning 36-page report, and minced no words as it chastised the Rio flop show while recommending a systematic overhaul.

From Gagan Narang, Heena Sidhu to Ayonika Paul, none of the shooters were spared for the disastrous outing, with the panel talking to each shooter individually.

Among the juniors though, talented shooters have emerged with quite a few shining on the world stage regularly, indicating a bright future.

The rise of junior shooters augers well for the sport, but the seniors have left a lot to be desired with their dismal showing, especially in the mother of all sporting events, where India has brought home four medals since the Athens Games, including a historic gold by Bindra at the 2008 Beijing edition.

Vijay Kumar and Gagan Narang continued the trend at London 2012, winning a silver and a bronze each, and the shooters kept the good work going by returning with a decent haul from the Incheon Asian Games and Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Jitu Rai, who emerged as the brightest medal prospect in that period by regularly winning on the world stage, would prove to be the biggest disappointment as he failed to finish on the podium in both his pistol events at Rio.

The likes of Heena, Manavjeet Singh Sandhu, Narang, Apurvi Chandela and Jitu, among others, left the country thoroughly disappointed after they were unable to put on an impressive show.

The committee concluded that the consistent trickle of shooting medals since the 2004 Athens Games ended up making everyone involved in the sport complacent.

“Everyone took it for granted that there would be progress automatically, and forgot to ensure a systematic healthy process,” the report had stated.

“The committee was unanimous in its view that Indian shooting needs to change, change its attitude, its policies and practices, so that the booming talent gets a fair chance to flourish in a healthy atmosphere, and win all the medals that it can in the World Championships and the Olympics.”

It is an irony that the shooters let India down despite being provided all help while preparing for the mega sporting event.

Jitu revived his season by winning the Champion of Champions pistol award in the World Cup Final towards the end.

Meanwhile, India’s rich haul of 15 medals in the Asian Shooting Championship for rifle and pistol in Tehran saw a lot of positives. It saw some new stars emerge with Shahzar Rizvi and Ruchita Vinerkar being the most notable faces.

There were a few others such as Shubhankar Pramanik, Anmol Jain, Swapnil Kusale, Manavaditya Rathore, son of the India’s first Olympic medallist in shooting, and Anant Jeet Singh Naruka who did very well, continuing the work in progress.

In the junior category, there was lot to cheer about as India finished second overall with a total of nine gold, five silver and 10 bronze medals at the year’s second and final Junior World Cup in September in Azerbaijan.

They finished second in the tournament, an improvement of two places after being placed fourth in the year’s first World Cup.

Meanwhile, the ISSF (International Shooting Sport federation) has rung in some changes to international events that will rob a number of existing male shooters of their favoured events.

Bindra is heading the panel that has recommended the changes. Prepared to face brickbats, Bindra tried to reason with those who criticised the idea.

The ISSF announced that the double trap event will be replaced by trap mixed gender team event, while 10m air rifle mixed gender team event will replace the 50m rifle prone event.

The 50m pistol men event will be taken over by 10m air pistol mixed gender team event. All this is being done in an effort to correct the gender imbalance in medal events at the Olympics.

Costa, the league’s leading scorer, will miss the match after picking up his fifth booking last weekend and Batshuayi, who signed from Olympique de Marseille in the close season, has been tipped to get his first league start.

“When you __have Diego in the team it is very hard to get a chance because he is playing so well and scoring goals, but I’m sure Michy is ready to take his opportunity because he is working hard every day,” Matic told the London Evening Standard.

Batshuayi has scored three times in 13 appearances for Chelsea, and Matic said the 23-year-old Belgian was an excellent understudy to Costa.

“Of course he has benefited from working with Costa,” Matic added. “It was the same with me seven years ago (in Matic’s first spell at Chelsea). It was very good for me to see how Frank Lampard played, how Michael Ballack played and Michael Essien.

“So it is good for Michy and a good experience for him to see Diego’s movement. He will __have learned from watching and playing with Diego.”

Midfielder N’Golo Kante is also suspended, and Cesc Fabregas is expected to partner Matic in midfield for the league leaders when 10th-placed Bournemouth visit Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been banned for five matches and fined 100,000 pounds ($123,000) for racially abusing an opponent, the English FA said on Tuesday.

“It was further alleged that this breach was an ‘Aggravated Breach’ as it included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality,” the FA said.

Shelvey, who denied the charge at an independent hearing, was ordered to attend an FA education course.

The England international, who has also played for Liverpool and Swansea City, has seven days to appeal against the decision.

Viswanathan Anand played out a draw with long-time rival Vladimir Kramnik of Russia to end the London Chess Classic with a shared third result after the end of the ninth and final round in London.

India vs England Live Score

The highlights of Anand’s campaign were the innovative ideas he displayed, while the lone low point was the defeat against Hikaru Nakamura in the third round. Anand remained the biggest star if the fan following was anything to go by.

Wesley So of the United States expectedly won the tournament with an easy draw with white pieces against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in the final round.

The Filipino turned American ended up with six points out of a possible nine and remained a half point ahead of second placed compatriot Fabiano Caruana who also played a draw with Anish Giri of Holland.

Anand, Hikaru Nakamura of the United States and Kramnik tied for the third spot on five points apiece and it’s almost a certainty now that the Indian ace will get a call back for the next year of the Grand Chess tour which will __have a new event added to the existing four.

Wesley So couldn’t __have wished for a better first appearance in London. His phenomenal debut brought him both the tournament victory worth USD 75,000 and, more importantly, a win in the Grand Chess Tour worth USD 100,000.

“This is definitely my best achievement ever,” So said.

Anand was all praise for the new star in world chess.

“I guess the word that comes to my mind is effortless,” he said, adding, “It really looks effortless. He doesn’t even seem to be trying very hard. He’s been undefeated for so long. I’m very impressed by how easy he makes it seem.”

Anand played white and opened with the queen pawn that did not give him many chances as Kramnik was well armed. The result was a quick draw when Anand decided there was not much left to play for.

The Indian was in fine fettle throughout the tournament and has every chance to be among the top eight that gives a chance to make to next world championship.

“I’m definitely going to play in the World Cup, that’s my main chance to qualify for the Candidates’. In the mean time, I’m very excited to be in the Tour so definitely my ambitions are quite high. Australia head to Melbourne winners but not grinners

Australia head to Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan with some festive cheer after winning the series opener in Brisbane but Steve Smith’s side will not find many Christmas presents under the tree from local media.

Pundits described Australia’s 39-run win in the first day-night Test held at the Gabba as one of the most gripping matches of the year.

India vs England Live score

However, they could conjure only faint praise for the home side after they set Pakistan a mammoth 490-run chase and very nearly let them get there on day five.

“Australia will take a one-nil series lead to Melbourne, but it was Pakistan who skipped off the Gabba like winners,” cricket writer Malcolm Knox penned for Fairfax media.

“For Australia to skim home with a 39-run margin, after leading by nearly 300 on the first innings, suggests a litany of blunders.”

After losing five Tests in succession in Sri Lanka and at home to South Africa, Australia __have hit back to win their last two with a new-look side energised by two of their three rookie batsmen.

Smith, however, is under no illusions about his team’s growing pains.

“It showed we’re still not the finished product,” he told reporters. “We’ve got to continue to work hard, and keep the foot on the throat when we’ve got (opponents) in that position, and be ruthless.”

CAUTION CRITICISED

The comments seemed ironic when weighed against Smith’s waiving of the right to enforce the follow-on after Pakistan were skittled for 142 in their first innings, 287 runs short of Australia’s total.

His cautious field settings on day five, with Pakistan still needing 108 runs for victory with only two wickets in hand, were queried by former captains Michael Clarke and Mark Taylor and slammed as “ridiculous” by ex-England skipper Michael Vaughan.

Smith’s faith in his front-line seamers was ultimately rewarded when Mitchell Starc broke through to remove centurion Asad Shafiq with a perfectly pitched bouncer.

But it exacted a heavy physical toll that could __have repercussions for the next match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Workhorse Josh Hazlewood bowled 42 overs in the second innings alone, with Starc, still yet to reach peak form after an injury lay-off in the leadup to the home summer, bowling 38.

Along with fellow paceman Jackson Bird and spinner Nathan Lyon, the pair were spared only three overs’ work during a hot and humid five days at the Gabba, with part-time slow bowler Nic Maddinson the only non-specialist thrown the ball.

Australia’s selectors said they would stick with the same 12 for the Melbourne Test but on Tuesday decided to draft in uncapped all-rounder Hilton Cartwright.

The Zimbabwe-born 24 year-old, who plays for Western Australia state, bowls medium pace and could also bat in the top six if required, selectors said.

“The bowlers got through a high workload in Brisbane and although everyone has pulled up okay, on reflection we wanted to give ourselves the option of including an all-rounder in Melbourne to ease that workload somewhat,” said selector Trevor Hohns.

Bowling coach David Saker lamented during the Gabba Test that Australia lacked an all-rounder to support the bowlers after Mitchell Marsh was jettisoned during the South Africa series for his failure to perform with the bat.

“We have to work with what we’ve got,” Saker told state radio.

Cartwright’s inclusion is likely to be grimly received by middle order batsman Maddinson, who has managed a total of five runs from his three Test innings since his debut against South Africa in Adelaide.

Ross Barkley struggling under weight of expectation at Everton

Liverpool Ross Barkley is out of the Everton team at a time when his future is up for debate, with 18 months left on his contract. Reuters

It was natural to put Ross Barkley’s nasty challenge on Jordan Henderson down to emotions running high in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Look deeper, though, and it might just __have been the moment when months of pent-up frustration inside the Everton midfielder came to a head.

Compared by many to England great Paul Gascoigne because of his technique, build and playing style, Barkley has long been viewed as one of English soccer’s most talented players. Much is expected of him by Everton fans desperate for Barkley a local lad attached to the club since the age of 11 to help the northwest club revive its glory years of the 1980s, when the Merseyside rivals were the country’s dominant forces.

Barkley is 23 now and should no longer just be regarded as one for the future. It is all about the here and now for Everton manager Ronald Koeman and the team’s supporters, and Barkley hasn’t developed as many would __have hoped.

Go to a game at Goodison Park and what quickly becomes apparent is the heightened sense of expectation when Barkley gets the ball _ and the loud groans of disappointment when something he tries doesn’t work. Everton supporters can be among the most passionate in England but they can also be among the most demanding, and Barkley appears to be lacking confidence and struggling under the weight of pressure.

Hence the ugly lunge on Henderson’s right ankle in the second half of Everton’s 1-0 loss against Liverpool on Monday that earned him a yellow card a red probably would have been merited and sparked a melee on the field.

Maybe over-praised by Roberto Martinez in his time as Everton manager from 2013-16, Barkley has found Koeman to be a harsher judge.

“Sometimes I expect more from Ross Barkley,” Koeman said this month after dropping the playmaker from the team for a match against Manchester United. “He needs to accept it. He needs to show it on the training pitch.”

After also criticizing Barkley this season for his tactical indiscipline, Koeman has dropped the player for games against Manchester City and Watford, too. In the final months of last year, Barkley was in the form of his career but now he is in and out of the Everton team at a time when his future is up for debate, with 18 months left on his contract.

Barkley is also being overlooked by England’s national team, with Dele Alli, Adam Lallana and Wayne Rooney preferred as options in the No. 10 position behind the striker. Barkley played at the 2014 World Cup, went to this year’s European Championship albeit, without playing a single minute _ and now is out of the squad completely.

At a time when Barkley should be growing in stature, he’s in decline as far as appearances for club and country is concerned.

“He is young, but he is not because he has been playing four years in the first team,” Koeman said. “It means you are not a talent anymore, and need to show what you can do.”

Barkley is well-built, impressively two-footed and can worry opposition defenses with his powerful, driving runs. Much of his time off the field is spent watching footage on YouTube of Zinedine Zidane and Gascoigne, his favorite players growing up, as well as contemporary stars in his position such as Mesut Ozil.

To be at the level of those kinds of players, Barkley needs to start being more consistent, more prolific he has two Premier League goals this season and less error-prone.

That might even require a move away from Everton to kick-start his career.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was injured by a knife-wielding attacker at her home on Tuesday.

The player’s spokesman, Karel Tejkal, said Kvitova suffered a left hand injury and has been treated by doctors. He said the injuries to Kvitova, who is left-handed, were not life-threatening.

“What happened to me was certainly not pleasant, but it’s behind me,” Kvitova said in a statement on the Facebook page of the Czech Republic’s Fed Cup team. “The main thing for me now is that the doctors find out what is the condition of my hand. I trust them and believe that everything will end up well.

“I __have the best possible care and I’m in touch with my loved ones. The worst is behind me.”

It was not immediately clear how the injury could affect the 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon champion’s play. Details of her injury were expected to be released later Tuesday.

Tejkal said the incident, which he described as a burglary, occurred Tuesday morning in the eastern Czech town of Prostejov.

Prostejov police spokesman Frantisek Korinek said the attacker, a man who is about 35 years old, escaped from the scene and was at large. He said police __have launched a manhunt.

Kvitova was scheduled to participate in a charity event in the city of Brno on Tuesday with another Czech player, Lucie Safarova.

“It’s horrible,” Safarova told Czech public radio. “Things like that are shocking to all of us. It can happen to anyone of us. That’s really terrible.”

In April 1993, Monica Seles was at the height of her success when she was stabbed in the back during a changeover at a tournament in Hamburg. A man reached over a courtside railing and knifed her, leaving an inch-deep slit between her shoulder blades.

Seles returned to the game 27 months later and reached the 1995 U.S. Open final.

In an unrelated move earlier Tuesday, Kvitova withdrew from the Czech Republic team at next month’s Hopman Cup mixed-team tennis tournament because of an earlier foot injury.
