Arsenal are working hard to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani before the summer transfer window closes on Monday night. If a deal is finalised, Gunners’ boss Arsene Wenger will allow Costa Rica international Joel Campbell to join Benfica.

This is according to the Metro, who cite Portuguese newspaper Record as claiming that Arsenal are pushing to sign Cavani, despite PSG insisting that the Uruguay international will stay at the Parc des Princes.

Arsenal in pole position for Cavani

Cavani has been linked with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool this summer, but it’s Arsenal who currently lead the race to sign the 27-year-old, with Olivier Giroud out of action until January after undergoing surgery on his ankle this week.

Following Wednesday night’s 1-0 victory over Besiktas in the Champions League play-off round, Wenger admitted that he might not sign another striker, stating that Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Lukas Podolski and Campbell are all capable of playing in the centre-forward position.

Wenger weighing up his options

He denied bizarre speculation that Arsenal were poised to sign Nikola Zigic, while he confirmed that Radamel Falcao was out of the club’s price range.

Falcao could reportedly join Manchester City before the transfer window closes, but Wenger appears to be preoccupied with bringing Cavani to the Emirates Stadium instead.

The world-class number nine is valued at a cool £51 million, meaning Arsenal would need to smash their transfer record in order to sign the player.

The Gunners could expect to receive a fee in the region of £16 million if they decide to cash in on Campbell.
