A deal at last
The club confirmed on Wednesday evening that the Argentina international was signed from Sporting for a fee of €20 million plus Luis Nani returning to Lisbon on loan for the duration of the season.
Rojo joins 51 days after both Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, the previous two acquisitions of the summer, officially arrived at Manchester United and there is now an expectation that at least two more players will follow.
The versatile defender may not be the marquee signing Manchester United supporters have been waiting for these past few months, but Louis van Gaal clearly views Rojo as a player of potentially great importance to the club.
Van Gaal praise
"Marcos is a very gifted defender. He has played at the highest level in world football and can play either as a central defender or left-back,” Van Gaal told the official Manchester United website.
“He has ability, physical strength and a willingness to learn that means he has a very bright future ahead of him.
“He had a very strong World Cup and has been playing in Europe for a couple of years now. He is a very good addition to the team."

Manchester United now have only 11 days to follow up Rojo’s signing with some other notable deals, not only to placate the club’s fans but also to reinforce a squad that is worryingly short on depth in key areas.
The departures of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra have ensured defensive additions are critical and, while Shaw and Rojo ensure the departure of the latter of the esteemed trio has been covered, a recognised centre-back is still required.
There is also the need for a combative midfielder to compliment Ander Herrera. Van Gaal is particularly short of options in this area, with Darren Fletcher the only player fit following injuries to both Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini.
Tom Cleverley could slot in next to Herrera, but it is not his natural position, and the England international is far from an all action midfield player in the mould of Arturo Vidal, who has been extensively linked.
