Manchester City unhappy over being used in Angel di Maria transfer

Di Maria was never a City target..

Manchester City are unhappy about being used in the Angel di Maria transfer and have insisted they never had any interest in the player that looks set to complete a £75million switch to rivals Manchester United.

According to The Sun, the Etihad Stadium club have made it clear privately that they have no interest in purchasing the Real Madrid man and never did – reports last week suggested Manchester City were planning an audacious swoop from under the noses of their local rivals at Old Trafford.

Transfer dealings pawn?

The report claims that the Premier League champions believe they were being used by officials at both Old Trafford and the Santiago Bernabeu at various points over the past week or so to try and get a better deal.

Offer declined

Manchester City, according to the report, were offered the opportunity to challenge Manchester United for Di Maria’s signature this summer, but manager Manuel Pellegrini was more than happy with the squad he has at his disposal.

Pellegrini has been relatively quiet in the transfer window this summer and has only signed three players in the form of defenders Eliaquim Mangala, Bacary Sagna, defensive midfielder Fernando and goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

Concentrating on contracts

However, Mangala and Fernando reportedly cost a combined £42million from Porto – the Sky Blues have been concentrating on renewals, with Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Samir Nasri and Aleksandar Kolarov all get new deals.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have only a single point from their first two Premier League matches and new manager Louis van Gaal looks as though he has a squad that is in need of significant recruitment , shortcomings that signing Di Maria would only partially address.
