Gillespie's achievements with Yorkshire have put him in the frame (©GettyImages). After a season of outstanding success with Yorkshire, Jason Gillespie has positioned himself firmly in the reckoning to be a future international coach – perhaps even with England.
A one time Three Lions nemesis, as one of Australia’s star bowlers, Gillespie has now settled into his job with the White Rose. Having guided them to promotion, he has now added the Division One title to his ever-more illustrious CV.
Vision for England
The 39-year-old coach has spoken in the past of his vision for English cricket, something which he is certainly building upon with the likes of Gary Ballance and Joe Root in his squad.
In fact, only one of Yorkshire’s title-winning side did not come through the club’s academy, and once again, the Headingley outfit are having a crucial say in the fortunes of the national side.
All that means Gillespie could be the perfect man to succeed Peter Moores in the future, though that should not be for some time with Moores not even a year into his second stint.

Building a legacy
It appears, too, that his project at Yorkshire is nowhere near its finale, with captain Andrew Gale telling the BBC that the head coach plans to “build a legacy” at the county. Gillespie is finishing his third season in charge, having taken the post in November 2011, after spending two seasons there as a player.
Gillespie’s hold over the England team – and English cricket more generally – could also be good news for the likes of Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid, who are usually in the ECB’s thoughts.
The bigger picture
Crucially, Gillespie’s vision suggests that he, as Moores did at Lancashire, is able to see the bigger picture, and the importance of domestic cricket in the development of the national side.
The scale of his achievements with Yorkshire cannot be understated. Their innings win over Nottinghamshire landed them their first title since 2001, after a staggering lull in their success considering the county’s rich history.
Big-name signings
However, the strengthening of their squad has been no fortunate accident. The presence of such a high-profile coach has attracted such big names as Aaron Finch, and the Australia opener was unsurprisingly a key man for them this season in the Natwest T20 Blast, even though they did not make it past the group stages.
The “ruthless” cricket which Yorkshire have displayed this season, particularly in the County Championship, could one day be played by England. For Australia, that attitude helped Gillespie and co retain the Ashes for 18 years, but ironically, it is now being tipped to fall into the wrong hands on the other side of the water.
