Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has been in talks over a possible move to Werder Bremen, the club’s captain Clemens Fritz has confirmed.

Last week, Bremen’s sporting director Frank Baumann revealed that a move for the German centre-back was discussed when the side signed Serge Gnabry over the summer.

Mertesacker is yet to make an appearance for the Gunners this season after he suffered a knee injury in pre-season and it appears the 32-year-old’s time in north London is nearing its end.

‘We __have talked about a possible move,’ Bremen skipper Fritz told Bild.

‘Per would be a great addition to Werder – as a footballer and as a person. It would be a good thing for the club when Per would opt for Bremen.’

The World Cup winner even admitted that he will begin considering moves away from the Emirates in the January transfer window.

‘I look at the perspectives for me and my family, and I think that I’ll intensify those thoughts from January on,’ Mertesacker recently stated.

‘That’s also the time when you can listen to other things [offers] when your contract is expiring.’
