Britain's Kyle Edmund was knocked out of the Shanghai Masters in the second round, beaten in straight sets by Stan Wawrinka.
Edmund, 21, fought back to level the second set after losing five successive games, but ultimately lost 6-3 6-4.
The Briton had three break-back points as the impressive Wawrinka served for the match, but squandered his chance.
Wawrinka, the third seed, said: "I'm really happy with my game so far. I wasn't expecting to play that well."
The Swiss, who hit 18 winners to Edmund's six, will next play France's Gilles Simon, who beat China's Wu Di 6-2 6-2.
Edmund, who this week climbed to a career-best ranking of 48th, matched Wawrinka in the first set until he was broken in the seventh game.
The three-time Grand Slam champion threatened to overpower the Briton, easing to a 2-0 lead in the second set, but Edmund battled back to 2-2 before Wawrinka broke again in the ninth game to end Edmund's hopes.
"I was expecting a tough match because he's improving a lot," world number three Wawrinka said of Edmund.
"I'm happy with the way I controlled the match, serving well. In general, there were a lot of positives for me."
