World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has been told he will lose his WBO belt unless he responds to a notice from the chairman in the next 10 days.
Fury, who claimed the title after he defeated Wladimir Klitschko in November last year, must explain why the belt should not be vacated due to ‘inactivity, breach of contract and performance-enhancing drugs.’
Fury, 28, has twice withdrawn from a rematch with Klitschko, his most recent reason was put down to his battles with mental health as well as admissions of taking cocaine to help deal with depression.
The news comes after Peter Fury, the unbeaten Englishman’s uncle and trainer, admitted that the heavyweight champions should be stripped of his belts on the promise he could immediately challenge after he has battled his own issues.
‘The titles shouldn’t be held up. While Tyson is out for medical reasons, the titles should be freed up – let people fight for them,’ he told BBC 5 Live’s Sportsweek.
‘But Tyson should be held in regard so that when he does come back to box he should be available to move straight into position to fight for those world titles.’
‘Quite clearly this young man has got some mental issues and I ask the world to give this plenty of consideration,’ his uncle added.
Fury's record in the ring
25 fights
25 wins
18 knockouts
‘Other famous people __have had these kind of problems and bounced back.’
Fury currently holds both the WBO and the WBA titles.
