Babita will compete in Ayodhya later this month A Delhi Police woman head constable has been selected to represent the capital in the National Wrestling Championship, to be held in Ayodhya from October 23. She was selected after winning the gold medal in the 19th female state wrestling championship, held near Jasola village last week.
Daughter of a farmer from Noida, Babita Nagar used to watch the dangal in her village of Sadullapur as a child. Her father, a district-level high jump athlete, encouraged her to take up wrestling. She joined the police force in 2001.
“I am the only female wrestler from my village to reach this level. I am working hard to get a gold medal,” Babita said.
Babita, who could not qualify for the 2008 Olympics because she lost her father, said she is now preparing for the next Olympics. “After my father’s death, my mother died in 2010. That period affected my game but I made a comeback in 2012 by winning a bronze at the national level,” she said.
Babita also clinched two gold medals in 2013 and 2014 in the all-India police games. Special Commissioner of Police (Delhi Armed Police) R S Krishnia said they __have been making all efforts to put together a strong wrestling team.
