Schweinsteiger's brother aims dig at Mourinho after midfielder makes Man Utd return

Why Wenger and Mourinho need a League Cup win this season

On Wednesday, Manchester United booked their place in the semi-finals with a 3-1 win over West Ham, while Arsenal were knocked out by Southampton at the Emirates.

The Saints were convincing 2-0 winners in north London against a Gunners side which had ten changes from the weekend.

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke the deadlock after only two minutes against West Ham but pictures suggest Adrian should __have been sent off at Old Trafford.

The Hammers goalkeeper went in on Ibrahimovic with his studs up as the Red Devils centre-forward dinked the the ball over him to make it 1-0 at Old Trafford.

Referee Mike Jones awarded United the goal but Adrian was not even shown a yellow card for the shocking challenge at the start of the EFL Cup quarter-final.

Ibrahimovic found the net following a brilliant back-heeled assist from Henrikh Mkhitaryan who started the match on Wednesday evening.

The Armenian midfielder has only made five appearances for United in all competitions since signing on the dotted line at Old Trafford in the summer.

Jose Mourinho’s men face West Ham for the second time in a week after a 1-1 draw with Slaven Bilic’s side at the weekend.

The images of Adrian’s challenge on Ibrahimovic were rather gruesome…

Henrikh Mkhitaryan destroys West Ham with filthy assist for Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s opener

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was making just his third start for Manchester United against West Ham on Wednesday night – and Jose Mourinho’s decision to overlook the Armenian in recent months is looking more and more peculiar.

The Armenian was left out of the side for over seven weeks before starting against Feyenoord last week – where he was awarded man of the match after a scintillating performance.

However, he was dropped for Sunday’s draw against the Hammers where United drew 1-1 and was only used as a second half substitute.~

Mkhitaryan was the Bundesliga player of the year last season and he showed off his dazzling array of skills with an exceptional assist for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to open the scoring within two minutes against West Ham.

Arsenal supporters were livid as Arsene Wenger was spotted laughing as he made his way down the tunnel following a 2-0 defeat to Southampton.

Claude Puel’s men ran out convincing winners at the Emirates against an inexperienced Gunners side in the quarter-final of the EFL Cup.

Wenger was criticised for fielding an under-strength team against the Saints, with the likes of Emiliano Martinez, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Lucas Perez being named in the starting XI.

Jordy Clasie scored the opener for the Saints in the 13th minute, before Ryan Bertrand doubled the lead for the away side just before the break.

Wenger, who made ten changes to the side which beat Bournemouth at the weekend, was spotted grinning as he made his way off the turf at the Emirates.

Gooners began sharing pictures of the Frenchman smiling when they were knocked out by Sheffield Wednesday last season in the competition.

Many accused him of lacking the right mentality as a result…

Bastian Schweinsteiger was giving a standing ovation after coming on to make his first appearance for Manchester United in eight months.

The veteran midfielder was told he could leave Old Trafford in the summer but failed to find another club.

The 32-year-old was initially sent to train with the club’s U23s but was reintroduced to first team training earlier this month.

Schweinsteiger was named on the bench for Sunday’s draw against the Hammers but came on as a second half subsitute with six minutes remaining against Slaven Bilic’s side in the EFL Cup.

The midfielder’s always been a huge crowd favourite at the Theatre of Draems and he was given a standing ovation by the Old Trafford faithful after making his first appearance of the season.

Germany has a new F1 champion but race in doubt

Germany has a new Formula One world champion in Nico Rosberg, after Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, but fans may not see him race on home soil next season.

The German Grand Prix, absent in 2015, is set to be struck off again in 2017 for financial reasons and Rosberg’s dominant Mercedes team say there is little they can do about it.

“We are hearing various rumours,” motorsport head Toto Wolff said at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Rosberg clinched the title.

“Having a German Grand Prix is part of the history, and especially for us as Mercedes with our factories nearby and many fans in Germany. It is important to race in Germany.”

Wolff said Mercedes had offered financial and marketing support in the past but it was not taken up. There had been no such talks this time.

Hockenheim boss Georg Seiler told German media last week that the economic risks of his circuit hosting the event in successive years were too great. Only 57,000 fans attended on race Sunday this year.

Next July would __have been the Nuerburgring’s turn under an alternation agreement that collapsed when that circuit changed owners.

Germany was listed on a provisional 21-race 2017 schedule with an asterisk but Formula One’s commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone has indicated it will be dropped.

Asked why Germany had seemingly fallen out of love with the sport, despite Mercedes winning both drivers’ and constructors’ championships for three years running, Wolff — an Austrian — suggested various reasons.

“I __have the theory, and its a personal view, that there is a bit of a hangover after all those years of dominance of Sebastian and Michael,” he told Reuters. “The Germans have won it all.

“You can see that it’s coming in cycles, how there are other sports like the football team (reigning world champions) that is of great interest and it might change with different drivers, maybe with Nico winning a championship,” he added.

“It would be really great if we could re-ignite the passion of the German fans in the same way Michael was able to achieve it 20 years ago.”

The difference was that Schumacher, who won seven titles, was the first German champion and came from the same humble but hard-working background as many of the fans camping in the forests with their beer and barbecues.

Rosberg, son of a champion and brought up in Monaco where he became fluent in five languages, lacks that common touch while Ferrari’s Vettel lives an intensely private life in Switzerland.

Bob Bradley hopes Crystal Palace recovery acts as catalyst for Swansea City

Bob Bradley, Crystal Palace, Swansea City, English Premier League, Premier League Football, Football Premier League, Sports News, Sports Bob Bradley is hoping for change in fortunes. (Source: Reuters)

Bob Bradley believes Swansea City’s thrilling 5-4 Premier League win over fellow strugglers Crystal Palace on Saturday could play a vital role in turning around the Welsh club’s fortunes this season.

The victory at the Liberty Stadium was only Swansea’s second of the league campaign and their first since Bradley took over as manager from Francesco Guidolin last month.

“I’m confident in dealing with tough situations… But sometimes, small things can be crucial. For this team to win like that, was incredibly important, not only for me but for the players, too,” Bradley told British media.
Despite the morale-boosting win, Swansea remain second-bottom in the table on nine points, two adrift of safety after 13 games.

“I’m not one to speak about myself, I think about the team, I think about the players. I think about how can we get better. But it’s always better to do those things on the back of a win. And we needed this,” the American added.

“It doesn’t change the way I continue to work, the way I speak to the team. But it helps. However, whilst I didn’t want to take away the positive part of the game, I will also make sure they know that there is more work to be done.”
