Following his winning goal in Chelsea’s win over Southampton at the weekend, Antonio Conte said Diego Costa is currently among the world’s very best strikers.

‘I think he is a striker who is one of the best in the world because he is showing his passion in the right way,’ said the Chelsea manager.

Confirmed: The teams in the last-16 of the Champions League so far as Leicester join Arsenal

So is Conte right? Is Costa currently one of the very best strikers in the world? Could he in fact be THE best right now?

With 10 goals to his name he is the top scorer in the Premier League but how does his overall game compare to his rivals in England and those playing in Europe?

We’ve compared Diego Costa’s league season so far with those of 11 strikers who could stake a claim as the best striker in the world to see how the Chelsea hitman compares…

GOALS

Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang 12 Diego Costa 10 Sergio Aguero 8 Cristiano Ronaldo 8 Lionel Messi 8 Luis Suarez 8 Gonzalo Higuain 7 Robert Lewandowski 7 Antoine Griezmann 6 Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6 Gareth Bale 5 Neymar 4

Just one of the big-name strikers playing in Europe has scored more – Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang of Borussia Dortmund. Four goals against Hamburg just before the most recent international break put the Gabon international in pole position.

ASSISTS

Antoine Griezmann 4 Neymar 4 Lionel Messi 3 Luis Suarez 3 Diego Costa 3 Robert Lewandowski 2 Gareth Bale 2 Cristiano Ronaldo 2 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 1 Gonzalo Higuain 0 Sergio Aguero 0 Zlatan Ibrahimovic 0

Not only has Costa been banging in the goals, he’s been helping his team-mates out too. The only players ahead of him – Antoine Griezmann and Neymar – are also the lowest scorers of the players here, suggesting they’ve been concentrating more on their overall team-work than just scoring. Impressive again from Costa.

PASS SUCCESS %

Cristiano Ronaldo 83.80 Sergio Aguero 83.10 Gonzalo Higuain 80.80 Lionel Messi 80.60 Antoine Griezmann 78.80 Gareth Bale 78.70 Zlatan Ibrahimovic 78.10 Luis Suarez 77.00 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 76.80 Robert Lewandowski 75.50 Diego Costa 74.10 Neymar 73.90

Costa fares awfully when it comes to his pass success rate in the league. Room for improvement on this front.

KEY PASSES PER GAME

Neymar 3.20 Robert Lewandowski 2.00 Antoine Griezmann 1.90 Lionel Messi 1.80 Diego Costa 1.70 Gareth Bale 1.50 Zlatan Ibrahimovic 1.40 Luis Suarez 1.40 Sergio Aguero 1.10 Cristiano Ronaldo 0.90 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 0.80 Gonzalo Higuain 0.50

As on the assists front, Costa proves himself a team player with his key passes figures. Only just behind Lionel Messi and ahead of Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale seems like a healthy place to be.

SHOTS OFF TARGET PER GAME

Cristiano Ronaldo 2.80 Robert Lewandowski 1.90 Zlatan Ibrahimovic 1.90 Lionel Messi 1.70 Sergio Aguero 1.60 Gareth Bale 1.60 Neymar 1.50 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 1.20 Gonzalo Higuain 1.10 Luis Suarez 1.10 Diego Costa 0.80 Antoine Griezmann 0.70

This is one where being at the lower end of the chart is where you want to be and Costa is nearly at the very bottom. Not only has he been deadly in front of goal this season, he’s making the most of his chances. Less than one shot wide per match is an incredible statistic for a centre-forward, with Griezmann the only player to better the figure.

So is Costa the best striker in the world right now?

Looking at his figures this season, it’s hard to argue with. Scoring loads of goals, helping out his team-mates and making the most of his chances – overall the Spain international is faring better than anyone else. His form has helped fire Chelsea to the top of the Premier League and if he can carry on in this vain it could be a very special season for Costa.
