Terry Flanagan knocks down Orlando Cruz to retain WBO world lightweight title

Terry Flanagan retained his WBO world lightweight title with an eighth round stoppage of Orlando Cruz in Cardiff.

Martin Gethin comes out on top in bloodbath fight with John Wayne Hibbert

The 27-year-old was making the fourth defence of his title since he became the WBO king in July 2015.

Cruz was bidding to make history in Wales by becoming the first openly gay boxer to be a world champion, but he was outclassed by Flanagan.

Flanagan was always in control of the fight and chipped away at Cruz’s enthusiasm.

Cruz was visibly deflated coming out for the eighth round and when he was floored twice in quick succession, the referee stepped in.

Flanagan keeps up his remarkable record in boxing as the Mancunian takes his record to 31 fights and 31 wins.

‘Once I hurt him, he didn’t want to know,’ said Flanagan after the fight.

‘I think I’ll __have Christmas off and spend it with my family, because I’ve just finished a 15-year camp!’
