While Sir Andy Murray and Roger Federer are among those battling it out in in Dubai, fellow world-class players Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are in the hunt for the trophy and ranking points in Mexico.
Djokovic, playing in his first ATP World Tour event in Latin America, had been out of main Tour action since his shock Australian Open second-round exit at the hands of Denis Istomin.
Federer OUT of Dubai as world No. 116 Donskoy pulls off major shockNadal, a two-time winner at the Mexico Open, also made his first return to action since losing in the Australian Open final to Federer.
Britain’s Kyle Edmund was also among those in action in round one, along with fellow familiar faces Juan Martin del Potro, Nick Kyrgios and Dominic Thiem.
Here’s a look at what happened in the opening matches…
How did Edmund do?
It was a disappointing outing for the Brit, who narrowly lost to big-server Sam Querrey.
Edmund battled back from a set down to level the match up but an early break in the decider ended his hopes of reaching the next stage.
Querrey, who beat the 22-year-old 6-2 4-6 6-3, has set up a second-round tie with David Goffin, who eased past Stephane Robert 6-1 6-2.
Biggest shock?
Jack Sock couldn’t emulate his success at the Delray Beach Open after being surprisingly dumped out by qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka.
The Japanese recovered from a set down to win 3-6 6-2 6-1, with Sock’s efforts from last week perhaps taking their toll.
Fellow American John Isner was the only other seed who crashed out, losing to compatriot Steve Johnson.
How did the other seeds get on?
Both Djokovic and Nadal secured their places in the next round with straight-sets victories.
The Serb battled past Martin Klizan, recovering from a break down in the second set to eventually win 6-3 7-6 (7-4), while Nadal eased past Misha Zverev.
Fellow seeds Marin Cilic, Goffin, Thiem and Kyrgios also advanced.
