Manchester United are set to offer £40million in order to beat Arsenal to Arturo Vidal, after having been told that is the figure Juventus are after.
The Daily Express claims that the Serie A champions have told their Premier League counterparts that they will not be accepting offers under £40million, in the wake of strong interest being shown in their Chilean midfielder. Vidal has attracted a number of suitors thanks to his reputation as being one of the best playmakers in the world, and it’s thought that Louis van Gaal is keen to make him his third signing of the summer.
It’s claimed that the 27-year-old would be open to the idea of an Old Trafford switch due to the fact that the Red Devils could offer him a lucrative contract. That, coupled with the fact that Vidal is seeking new challenges having won the Italian Scudetto three times in a row now, should be enough to ensure personal terms are agreed so long as Juve acquiesce.
Will Juve sell?
According to the Express United are more than happy to meet the £40million fee they’ve been quoted for Vidal, as Van Gaal is determined to partner him with new boy Ander Herrera in the middle of his midfield. That being said it isn’t too difficult to imagine a scenario wherein Antonio Conte backtracks on his earlier stance or indeed asks for more money, such is Vidal’s status in Turin.

With a middle of the park which is occupied by Paul Pogba, Vidal, Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio Juve have one of the most enviable set ups in Europe, and the Italian giants will want to make sure they don’t weaken themselves to the point where they can’t defend their domestic crown next year. With interest also high in Pogba it remains to be seen how Conte will conduct his business, with only one of the star pair likely to be allowed to depart.
United’s need
Having signed Herrera from Athletic Bilbao United’s midfield looks ever so slightly more composed than it did. However Van Gaal knows that in order to challenge for major trophies he needs more big-names, and a partner for the Spaniard is what he craves most at the moment.
The addition of a natural attacking threat like Vidal would undoubtedly improve United’s claim when it comes to the idea of winning back the Premier League at the first time of asking, and the Chile international’s pedigree would do wonders for the players around him who remember the frustrations of last season’s campaign.
The question remains though, will Vidal opt for a Champions League football-less United? Or will he wait to see if Arsenal back up their interest with a formal offer?
