Chelsea ready to cut Marco van Ginkel loan fee in half

Chelsea are willing to repay half of Marco van Ginkel's €1 million loan fee if he plays 20 games for AC Milan this season, reports Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Dutch international moved to the San Siro along with Fernando Torres in the final days of the summer transfer window. While Torres is set to spend two seasons in Serie A, the agreement for Van Ginkel is set to return to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Loan fee

Di Marzio, who is widely considered to be one of the most reliable sources in Europe, says AC Milan agreed to pay €1 million to loan Van Ginkel for the season. After signing for around €10 million in 2013, the fee could be considered a bargain if the midfielder goes on to perform well.

However, it could get even better for the Rossoneri as Chelsea have agreed to hand back €500,000 if the 21-year-old plays 20 games this season.

Resisted move

Originally, Van Ginkel resisted the chance to sign for AC Milan. The Dutchman was confident he could break into Chelsea's squad and was unsure over the loan deal at first.

"Van Ginkel initially resisted our advances," explained San Siro chief Adriano Galliani in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. "At a certain point we set him an ultimatum, but then I realised he wouldn't join us like that and I told him that I was joking.

Incentive

It is a clever incentive from Stamford Bridge officials, who know that more game time for Van Ginkel will help them in the long run. If the youngster gets more playing time as a result and further develops his talent, he could return to Jose Mourinho's team as a much better player.

Having made only four appearances for Chelsea, Van Ginkel needs game time if he is to reach the talent that convinced the Blues to fork out €10 million to sign him from Vitesse Arnhem. This financial deal is designed to aid Van Ginkel's passage into Filippo Inzaghi's side.

Loan deals galore

Van GInkel is just one of 26 stars loaned out by Chelsea this summer. Mourinho's huge roster of unwanted players have been spread far and wide over Europe. Christian Atsu and Ryan Bertrand were the only ones to stay in the Premier League, moving to Everton and Southampton respectively.

Three players joined their Dutch feeder club Vitesse while Lucas Piazon and Thorgan Hazard, who are considered to be amongst the best of Chelsea young talent, moved to the Bundesliga.
