Jose Mourinho has emphatically denied his Manchester United side set an unwanted record against Liverpool on Monday evening.

Mourinho’s side were widely reported to __have registered just 35% possession at Anfield in a drab gaolless draw, which represented the lowest possession stats United __have registered in since Opta began collecting data 13 years ago.

35% – Man Utd recorded just 35% possession against Liverpool; their lowest figure in a PL game in Opta's records (2003-present). Passive.

United and Mourinho were widely castigated for their negative tactics which at times saw them deploy a six-man defence in an attempt to nullify a Liverpool attack which had previously been laying top flight defences to waste.

Riled by the suggestion he has claimed something of an unwanted record, Mourinho attempted to discredit the possession stats in his own inimitable fashion, claiming: ‘It was 42%. We asked our guy. Our guy is better than them.’

‘Liverpool are a good team but they are not the last wonder of the world,’ he added.

‘Tactically from a defensive view we did really well.’
