Sam Eggington has promised to batter Frankie Gavin after his fellow Birmingham fighter failed to make the weight cut for the WBC International welterweight belt fight on Saturday.

Gavin weighed in outside the 10st 7lbs limit by some distance tipping the scales at 10st 9lbs 4oz to end his hopes of capturing the belt on Saturday.

Eggington still has the chance to claim the title, but the 23-year-old said he was astonished by Gavin’s weight issues, labeling him a disgrace to boxing.

‘It’s disgraceful,” he told Sky Sports.

‘He’s meant to be a professional and everyone keeps talking about his amateur background and this pedigree or that pedigree but he can’t even make a weight – even for a big title fight in his home town.

‘If I wanted to, I could __have called this fight off happily and still got a pay cheque.

‘It’s disgraceful, that’s all I can really say.’

Gavin tweeted on Friday morning he was being told he could not make the weight and would not be able to win the belt on Saturday.

I'm just concentrating on the fight now an winning.. the works done training gone great.. read into this what you want.. I'm ready #winning

The weigh in later that day confirmed Gavin’s weight issues and Eggington says he is going to embarrass his local rival.

‘I am going to batter him for that [failing to make weight],’ he said.

‘So not only when I beat him up to win the title, I am also going to make it even worse for him just because he didn’t make the weight.’

The fight was being billed as a grudge match between the two local lads in front of a home crowd.

With Gavin’s weight issues and Eggington’s pumped attitude, it still looks like it will be a good contest despite only one fighter being able to claim the belt.
