The Frenchman was a notable absentee during a squad training session in a car park ahead of the game but he appeared to believe he would be playing by tweeting ‘ready for tonight’.
Martial, 20, then sent fans’ alarm bells ringing by deleting the tweet, which suggested he would not be playing, although he did leave the post up on Facebook.
Bizarrely, he featured in a Snapchat from girlfriend Melanie Da Cruz, which appeared to show him having a facial prior to the match.
It was all very strange but his absence from the squad when the teams were announced proved to be no great surprise.
However, United __have now moved to clarify the situation by confirming Martial and France international team-mate Morgan Schneiderlin missed out through injury.
The statement said both players were nursing knocks and it’s believed Martial has a minor knee problem.
Intriguingly, the duo were said to have suffered the injuries on Saturday, which doesn’t clear up exactly why Martial was tweeting he was ready for the match on the Monday.
But Mourinho is expected to provide an update in his pre-match conference on Wednesday ahead of their Europa League clash with Fenerbahce.
